Hi Pepper
The 3790 is not a bad unit but is a different package format to normal navigators and I thought pricy, it doesn't support general topo maps but
its own format as below.
Their have been a few GPS questions recently and I have answered that
none of the current crop can match the off-road features of my
now obsolete Garmin 276c.
(Saw one in helicopter on
the Lake Eyre TV special last night.)
Unfortunately products are constantly being trimmed to match a
majority perceived need and many useful features are being culled.
Simple things like the number are types of waypoints (often called favourites these days).
If I had to jump today I would pick the following from the current crop,
it can be loaded with its own version Oz Topo maps as can most Garmins including your 3790.

Be aware that with some fiddling you get ebay chinese imports a lot cheaper
which will support topo maps like Hema with ozi-explorer , but generally these have poorer standard road maps sets.

A lot of the cheap ebay ones have Igo 8.0 as there street mapping, which I find much better than Garmins.

"...Garmin 276c.

More likely to be the aviation version
GPSMAP 296 or similar (e.g. 196, 496).
Cheers
Greg

I have several GPS's (like 7) and over the years have used TomTom, Garmin, Sygic, Route66, Igo8 and a few others. I have found the Igo8 to be head and shoulders above all those I have used - and that includes the latest Garmin I only purchased 6 months ago.
Cheers
Captain

I agree about Igo 8, I have a 3 month old Garmin, with the latest maps & it picks absolutely ridiculous
routes, compared to the El Cheapo eBay GPS with Igo 8 software that I bought for my wife.
I have no idea why the new Garmin is so hopeless as the old Garmin Nuvi 310 that it replaced picked much better
routes. The new one wanted me to enter a freeway the wrong way down an exit ramp!

Myself and Noel K got the Garmin 1490T , we are happy with it and it will take the Garmin Topo maps which are in my opinion brilliant, you can also have T4A and Shonky Maps but they don't do routing like the Garmin Topo.

I have a HP212 PDA which I interface with a bluetooth GPS.
Run both OziExplorer CE and A version of Igo8 depending if I want auto routing and vector maps or raster maps.
The HP has lots of other uses as
well.

The HP 212 cost me $600 about 18 months ago
The blutooth GPS I bought several years ago and don't remember the cost but you should be able to buy one for $50 - $80
OziCE costs about $100
I already had lots of maps from various sources, both free and paid for. A good basic set can be obtained free from the web.
Igo8 cost me about $200 I think
