My wife has a Samsung Tab running Android. The GPS works fine with google maps. I have loaded the Android version of OziCE but that will not work properly

I have used a tablet PC on the dash of the Patrol for years with a USB mouse GPS (on the roof) running XP and OziExplorer/Oziexplorer 3D as the main navigation aid when in the bush, and occasionally Google Earth for fun. Just be aware that if you don't have internet access (Next G, 3G, or something, which you won't when you move out into the sticks) Google Earth wont work. You can get around it by pre-loading all the
places you are going to visit so that they sit in GE's cache but forget an area or move somewhere you haven't planed on and your stuffed!
Also Google Earth can be quite poor in many areas with blurred images, GPS tacking less than accurate and roads way off the mark. Much better to have good mapping like Hema or Geo Sciences with something like OziExplorer or one of the other good mapping products out there. And don't forget to have good paper maps of the area you are going to as a backup for when windows spits the dummy or the tablet dies.
Of course if you want GE and a tablet just for fun in areas with good 3G coverage and not far from civilisation then go for it.
Just completed 9,500K through NT with a dedicated Car PC running W7, Centrafuse, OziExplorer and USB GPS, also took a SPOT GPS tracker so friends could keep an eye on us and have fun following us on Google Earth.

Oh and I carry a backup to the mouse GPS in the form of a Garmin eTrex which can be used hand held when out walking or hooked up to the Car PC if anything happened to the USB GPS. You can never have too many navigation aids LOL

Gday Roy,
Thanks for the information.I will give the pc tablet a go.I know you have to cache GE on the area I want to traverse as there is no next G phone service.

Roy, download a program called Mobile Atlas Creator. Its free and can download maps or sat photos for google, yahoo etc etc for Oziexplorer.
Much better than caching. I have downoladed the entire
Vic High country at zoom level 17 or better.

Thanks for the tip on creator, I don't bother caching as I have all my DVD maps loaded on the HD for seamless operation but could be useful for the odd time I look at GE. I have a dedicated MiniITX PC I built with a 7" touch screen which syncs up with the
home PC's when I park on the drive so I don't have to mess with the system in the fourby, it also has Next G to download email and messages when I hit pockets of civilisation or need to book a
camp site, hotel etc online.
