Planning on travelling to
Nhulunbuy and Cobourg Peninsular probably late July, any thoughts re good
camping sites and has anyone had probs with permits.
Waiting on NT for advice re which will be required.
Are the roads reasonable for a Patrol and off road camper?
Cheers
Noels

Click on the permits section on this site and all will be revealed.
Both roads will be ok with the trailer, you may not be able to take the trailer to gove/
Nhulunbuy as there are restrictions

The road to Gove is easy with small to average corrugations as it is graded regularly. It doesnt take long to travel it and one
overnight camp is all you will need. There are lots of
good camp choices along the way.

We towed an off road trailer to Gove. On the trip we saw the fisheries towing their 25ft aluminium boat on the track. I thought it was a bit rough for a large boat like that. Of course crossing the rivers was easy as the boat just floated.
The worst
river crossing we saw a holden ute sitting there who was coming out from Gove. I asked him what his problem and he said the ute would not start after the
river crossing. To cross the rivers he waited for a 4x4 to cross and asked to tie on behind. Then he just turned his motor off and was towed across. He said the
water went right over the windscreen and flooded his gear in the back but he did it on every
river crossing. We found his distributor had vibrated around and the points where not opening - a bit of home mechanics and he was on the road again.
The other car crossing with us was a suzuki sierra. He got half way across and just bobbed to the surface and floated off down stream. Some big boulder rocks placed down stream stopped him and then he sunk. We towed him out but he had drowned his car. Pistons full of
water.
Great trip and we took it slow and easy taking 4 days to cross from just south of
Katherine to Gove. One stage there was a very large buffalo on the track that just would not move. We saw another car who was comming out of Gove just drive up to it and lean on the horn. The buffalo promptly charged the landcruiser and the guy slammed it in reverse to get away. Whew.
