Hi, In July this year my son and I are travelling from
Melbourne to
Alice Springs over about 4 days and wonder if anyone could tell us some good and safe spots to
free camp on the way (we have a self sufficient caravan so don't need power, water or ammenities). Thanks, Graham

Hi Graham,
The possibilities are endless and much will depend on how long you will take to do the trip. You will be pretty safe if you are out of sight of the road. Suggest get hold of a copy of Camps Australia - Camps 6 is the latest version but many of us are still happily using Camps 4. It will pay for itself after about 2 camps.
Cheers,
Val

What Val said, it's not called the campers bible for nothing!!!!
Available from the
shop on this very site, just get the basic one to start with, it has all the info but you dont have to pay for misleading (sometimes) pictures.
camps 6 basic edition
cheers Colin

There are many free overnight stops along this road...and there is also many , many tourists just like you competing for a spot at them ...be there by at least 3 pm or you will most likely find you will not be able to get in and will have to travel on to the next one...damn !.....and CAW is a good investment....cheers

The first times we did the trip, you could pull off and head into the scrub to find a place to
camp.
Nowadays there seems to be a fence along most of it.... still lots of stops. Just travel as far as you want to... then keep a look out for a likely spot. Make sure that you are settled in a an hour or so before dark unless you are willing to chance the cattle and kangas.

And here's a web site that may help
http://www.ozcamps.net/
The reason I'm so happy to help with
camp sites is that I go to the lesser known secret one's told to me by mates around a
camp fire that I have bribed with beers & port. ;)
Cheers & beers - Wayne
