G'day all,

We are heading off to Cooper Creek in six weeks time in our Bravo 4wd & semi off road camper. We are fully set up for bush camping & are looking for any information on places of interest & bush camp sites west of Charleville. Our focus this trip is to explore the areas around Quilpie & Windorah & what's in-between them. We have 16 days to do this & would only like to change camp sites 3 to 4 times max in this time. We are restricted with our medium 4wd & not a fully of road camp trailer to go to the hard to get to bush camp sites. My plan is to camp at Lake Houdraman just north east of Quilpie & just after you cross the Cooper about 15km out of Windorah. I'm looking for 1 or 2 more bush camp sites in this area & any places interest you my think are worth a look.

Thanks for any feedback,
Michael.

Michael and Jill

As a former owner of a Mazda Bravo, and now Mazda BT50, you can take it where the so called big names go.

My Bravo had only a 50 mm lift with heavier duty springs, BFG AT tyres, snorkel, 3 way battery system and not a lot else.

I can assure you it will not cause you grief. I took mine where some of the others have gone even towing a 1.8 + tonne off road Kimberley Karavan,eg., Bloomfield Track. It will climb better than some of the others.

Mostly, it is being confident in your driving ability. As for the camper trailer, if you do not drive like a maniac you will be fine. Lower tyre pressures and speed when necessary.

I cannot help you with the locations but you will have fun.

Cheers

Welford is a great spot to visit, visit the NP website as it has some good information on camping sites etc. Also, don't overlook a visit to Jundah, very friendly place and be sure to call in to the pub. From memory you can camp at the back of the pub, power supplied (but don't quote me on this).

And if time permits, head out to Diamantina NP.....

Cheers, The Landy

You could camp for a few days on Kyabra Ck, just down the Euromanga Rd from Thylungra, great waterhole. Then head up the Budgerygar Rd at Thylungra and visit Battle Hole, Magee's Shanty and Magoffins Grave on the way to Welford NP via the Yaraka-Windorah Rd.

Your info is great. I have Googled your info & the waterhole looks like a good spot to camp. If you have the time describe what it's like there.

Thanks,
Michael.

It's a very nice hole with excellent camp sites along the bank with sandy/gravel abse to most of them. You can get a yellabelly in there too with a trap. Actually they don't come any better, people have been camping here since the 1860's.

Hi Michael

The caravan park in Quilpie is very clean and friendly. The only down side was the smell of the water, hydrogen sulphide - rotten egg gas.

When we do go back, we will stay longer next time.

Cheers

Make sure you have plenty of room in your fuel tank when you get to Eromanga as they refine their own diesel there and it was 15 cents a litre cheaper there than Charleville a few years ago. And would you believe that they export a lot of there oil.
