I know it sounds crazy, but we are (3 4WD) planning to leave Sydney in 2 weeks 4am in the morning. Then by midday crossing the Murray river near Tom Groggin.

How long would it take to drive along the DAVIES PLAIN TRACK, turning into the BUCKWONG TRACK and then along Mt Hope road down to OMEO?

Next day(Sunday early morning) towards Mt Hotham Heights and then on to the BLUE RAG RANGE TRACK.

Back home via Bright and Freeway. Dont care what time we get back.
Also need to mention that each 4WD has 2 drivers.

Any advise/feedback most welcome.
Thank you
JS.

Davies Plain and most other tracks in that area are closed because of rain damage.

I do not know about the Mt Hotham area.

If you go anywhere in that area take a chain saw there are plenty of trees across the tracks.

Mate the Murray has been in flood more often then not for the last 6 months or so. You can check it on water info. The flow at Biggara at the monent is 1900ml or 1.1m. Far to dangerous to cross.
good luck Pete

From the Parks Vic site.... "Davies Plain Track including the southern access to Charlies Creek is closed". Any other options you have in mind? Murray River at a guess will be most likely be too deep to drive although permission to use the private bridge at Tom Groggin is possible by ringing in advance.
Day two would take a minimum of 4 to 5 hours to Bright.
That's a dam long way to drive for what effectively is 15 to 20km of intermediate offroad. You NSW mob must be hard up for any decent driving :-)

We crossed at Tom Groggin a month back without any problems. But we also do it on a regular basis. The best way is a downstream loop. Don't go straight across.

Take heed of the parks site and advice.

NE rivers are all back up after recent rain. A little more due this week will make some river crossings touch & go.
Cheers Craig.........

When the tracks are open and in reasonable nick it takes, from memory, about 2 hours to Charlies Creek from Tom Groggin crossing of the Murray and a further 2 hours to Omeo from Charlies Creek. Great drive and very much worthwhile taking longer to take time to smell the gum trees. If you are lucky there is a resident brumby stallion who seems to own the section of high country between Charlies and Buckwong that might be around......this is one beautiful beast....shiniest black coat and seems to be 6 foot tall at the shoulder (yeah I know he wouldn't be that tall but he is just so imposing in this environment).

wow... thank you all for the info.
just spoke to a local ranger and he thinks that the DAVIES PLAIN TRACK should re-open soon. However we might consider going up to MT PINNIBAR, past GIBSONS and WHEELERS CREEK HUT. Then there are a few options to get to Omeo or might check in at the BANAMBRA PUB for the night.

The ranger was not able to give me any info on how deep the river is at the tom groggin crossing.
