I've just been asked this question, and I did a quick search but could not find the answer to this particular question.
why does the rating on snatch straps always seem to be considerably higher (approx 8 tonne) than on the D shackles?
I have seen 3 straps break but never a rated shackle fail?
The numbers don't seem to make sence

Lack of consistency with the standards being applied I believe, but please correct me if I am wrong.
The shackles are from the rigging arena. So a 3.5T shackle is rated for a safe 3.5T vertical lift. They have regulations where there is some huge safety factor... like 10 times or something, so its breaking strength is maybe 35T.
The snatch strap has the breaking strength written on it... 8000kgs

Yep, recovery gear has no safety factor. Whats written on it is its limit.
Rigging gear must pass a safety factor of 10x.
So an 8mm chain, which is rated to lift 2T on a straight leg, has to actually be able to lift 20T brand new.
