i have a prodigy p3 which i purchased from a store on ebay (victoria from memory) and its great. removes easily between trips so its not hanging about in the way in the car and works like a treat in forward or reverse, plus no need to worry about what angle its installed on.

Redarc make one with a remote unit so that all you see is a couple of knobs in a standard switch knock out in the dash or centre console. The main control unit is up under the dash out out of the way.

Don't bother checking up on them. They are the old style synchroniser type. These work by applying weak breaking when you first apply your brakes. As you hold the brake pedal down the braking power increases. This can leave you without sufficient braking at the beginning of an urgent stop manoeuvre.
The most efficient brake controllers are of the pendulum type. These have a pendulum (or other method of sensing the declaration during braking.) If you need to brake heavily right from the start, a pendulum will sense this. A synchroniser type will not. If you are running up to a slow stop the pendulum will sense this and only apply soft braking. A synchroniser type will just keep building up the braking strength.
I would suggest you look for a pendulum type of controller.

Peter,
Not true mate.
I have the Redarc remote head unit and it works a treat.
The braking force is adjustable if required with a turn of
the knob, but I have found this unnecessary once adjusted correctly. The braking force from the trailer should never be firm enough to pull up the vehicle but just assist the vehicles own brakes.
Many vehicles also don't have much leg room under the bottom of the dash and the prodigy style controller just hangs down too low.
The Redarc controller is a very good solution in my opinion.
Bill.

Yep, I've had one of their earlier ones for about 11 Years and find it reliable and effective.
Don't know much about the technology behind em, but I suppose everyone has their different ideas about these things.

Sand Man Bill - You say "Not true mate." What is not true. I made no claim that the synchro controllers do not work. I just explained that pendulum controllers work better. If synchro controllers are such a good thing then why have Tekonsha dropped them from their range? Show me any manufacturer who really pushes them, apart from Redarc. Please take your head out of the sand and come into the 21st century.
I therefore suspect that you are saying that the Redarc controllers are of the pendulum type. I have been back to the Redarc web site and can find no reference to them claiming that they do contain a decelarometer of some type. Perusing the operation manuals of their different models does not reveal anything of that nature.

PeterD,
Hell, you are a touchy bloke aren't you?
You are reading something into my reply that's not there.
My statement is that the Redarc controller works as good as any other type or style .
I purchased one after a recommendation from a camper trailer retailer who uses a Redarc controller to activate the brakes on their trailer that carries three camper trailers on a regular basis. That was good enough for me to try one and I'm happy with it.
I looked at the Prodigy and it would just not have fitted in my vehicle. My knees would have been bashed raw with one mounted under the dash.
Who bloody cares whether it is a pendulum type or not.
If it works, use it.
Bill.

Another vote for the Prodigy.
We have had several different types over the years and these are the best.
