I am driving up to the NT in May and was thinking about heading into Arnhem Land and
Nhulunbuy.Could any one tell me is it worthwhile and how easy is it to organise permits.I would go along the Central Arnhem road and return back through
Jabiru,if that is allowable.

Hi Coot,
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Arnhem Land. We organised our transit permit to
Nhulunbuy online and picked up the permit in Katherline a few days later. Distance 750km. A requirement was to have the first night in
Nhulunbuy booked at one of the two accommodation venues or at a friends
home, if you have any there. They
check up on this.
Several camping areas in town did not require permits but the best areas do.
Cape Arnhem, on the east coast, is fabulous but no trailers are allowed.

Thanks Navigator 1.
I will be towing my tvan so maybe I could be a bit restricted as to where I can go. Which way did you go on the return trip, same as the way in?

Yes you can only go in and out from the south, no permits given for the roads across to the east from
Nhulunbuy.

G'day Coot,
we spent a month out at Nhulunbuy/gove last year and loved it. Cape arnham is awsome but yeh no trailers im not sure about accomadation as we had friends in town. there are a few camps close to town where you don't need permits your general permit covers it.
memorial park on the way in definately worth a look. there a few nice small creeks to
camp at on the way in a few houndred k's out of town if don't make it all the way in one day. We went in very early in the season and the road was in great condition. The goyder river can be a trap it was at about 1.4m and flowing hard when we went in.(and watch out for the local croc).
i think you'll find it impossable to get permits to come back out through
jabiru.
hope this helps cheers ash.
