Got a letter today from the RTA.

While were all know, that from the begining of this year we got an increse in how many points we have on our licence, there has also been a decrease in how many points you can lose in 22 different offences.

As I could not scan the letter I just copied the info from their website, which is almost word for word.

The table below shows the penality points from last year, and the new points from the begining of this year. Some offences now have the points removed. Mostly those involving round a bouts.

Demerit points for 22 offences reduced or removed

What a joke.

Reward the serial offenders by reducing the demerit points but keeping the same fines hence keeping them on the road.

Can't believe the NRMA supported it too.

68000 drivers lost their license last year.

So with the various state governments trying to raise revenue by booking motorists for minor offenses. The governments were shooting themselves in the foot. All these people were no longer on the contributing to their retirement fund.

With doing some more reading, I have found the info for professional drivers.

You can find it here.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/rulesregulations/penalties/demeritpoints/20110131_demeritchanges.html

But basically it says that you must be employed for more than 20hrs a week driving as a professional driver. You need to apply for this status at the rta, showing proof of employment etc. From what I can understand of the info, you can only apply for this AFTER you have lost some points.

Just another case for the fact that we need federal road rules.
Regarding demerit points. Here in W.A. double demerit point loss is in force during public holidays and long weekends but why only during this time? As a previous writer stated that if too many people lost all their points the governments are "Shooting Themselves in the Foot"
