We were proposing to cross the Simpson Desert (east to west) this April.

However, I see that Bedourie has had 437.2 mm of rain in the last week including 319.1 mm on Sunday.

Surely this would have to be close to a record.

Might have to get the Cooper ferry shifted to Eyre Creek.

Does anybody have any experience with knowing how this rain will effect the crossing on the QAA line.

Not looking Good for QAA - here is that bit from weatherzone today.

Falls of up to half a metre of rain in Queensland's Channel Country are expected to deliver more water to Lake Eyre in outback South Australia and give graziers a third bumper season.

Kamaran Downs Station, near Bedourie, tipped out 519 millimetres from the rain gauge between last Thursday to Sunday, the highest gauging on record.

The annual average rainfall for the station is less than 200 millimetres.

Manager Trevor White says he has never seen anything like it.

"It's a bit like jumping from the shower into the bathtub, you know," he said.

"You haven't got to worry too much with your cattle because there's so much high ground around.

"There's a lot of sandhill country and a lot of high ground, but it will cut a lot of roads and tracks up."

Hi Pushy (unknown name)

We are in the same boat. And also picked the same direction. At least that way its not a long way into the Simpson before you meet any mud and not be able to get through it. Coming the other way its a damned long way back. The east to west also gives us the alternate of just heading north to the Gulf and check out anything between Birdsville and the ocean. Maybe not even get all the way to the Gulf.

But going into the Simpson with mud around is not our cup of tea. Sure a bit wont hurt and can even lighten a boring drive up a bit. But not a whole lot of it like I saw on a video (by a bloke called Shaun). No thanks.

But I suggest to keep the plan open until you get to Birdsville. If we can get there that is. Our current plan is to start in early May.

So like you I will be checking out this thread every now and then.

Best iof luck

Phil

Hi Pushy,

We were hoping to do the same as you but am now thinking we might be better off waiting til July. We will leave our decision as late as possible. The desert is meant to be opened on 15th March so i figure we will know more after that.
