2 years ago, my nephew bought a set of Cooper tyres (or should that be tires?) which came with a 5 year guarantee. Recently, a rear tyre delaminated whilst he was towing his van with his young family on board. Apart from a stuffed tyre, he also has significant body damage to his vehicle. When he approached the dealer to replace the tyre, he was told it was out of the guarantee period as they are only guaranteed for 5 years FROM THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE. Apparently they were 3 years old before he bought them, but how was he to know that?

Just a heads up for those with them, or planning a purchase. Things ain't always what they seem.

Yep - it's not right - but the only remedy is to personally check the dates of manufacture code on the tyres. Much like checking the use-by and ingredients list on supermarket foods. As the bloke in the RAA commercial here in SA always asks......"Trev - who can you trust?".
Web search for "tyre age codes" will get plenty of sources.

It's not the only remedy, the best remedy is never buy Cooper tyres!
The only thing less reliable than their tyres .... is their warranty!!

Mark, it is an opinion based on indisputable fact.
The Cooper's Victorian State distributors make promises & then blatantly deny all knowledge when the chips are down. (Read State sales manager).
I am also not criticising their product behind their backs, as I told them that I would pass on the information about their lying & cheating at every available opportunity.

If the tyres are so good, why does the warranty only apply in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane?
Let me think, oh yeah, the other State capitals are too close to the Outback!

To this day I have never had a puncture with Coopers on roads or tracks, only bush bashing. If one were to stick to roads and tracks then really I can't recommend Coopers highly enough and I have been on one or two rough tracks in the last few years or so.

Can't really comment on the warranty as when I destroy tyres it's nobodies fault but my own.

Coopers would be singularly the most complained about tyre on the internet.

My issue wasn't so much with the quality of the tyres, which incidentally is pretty ordinary, but with the lies & conniving in response to a legitimate warranty claim.

They pulled the old standard " you have been running the wrong pressures" routine, but as my background is in yachting, I produced an itemised trip log which showed exactly where I aired up or down & the relevant pressures.
Then they begrudgingly agreed to a pro-rata claim & as they knew I had a trip planned later that same year, they suggested that, as the tyres were worthless to them, that I use them until just prior to the trip & go away with new tyres.
In hindsight, at that point I should have smelt a rat.

Do I need to explain what actually happened?

I'm with Shaker on this one ! I run an outback 4WD tour company and pretty much the only tyres that cause problems ( not on my vehicles as I don't run them ) are the Coopers !

Hi Guys

One tyre dealer here in Clare who are the Cooper Dealers as well as other major brands once said to me...

We can sell you band 'X' with confidence, but if you insist on Coopers, then follow me. He then took me out the back and showed me the dozens of Cooper tyres that are claimed on. Some look new, until you have a closer look inside, or some as new tyres with lugs missing.

Like he said, he is happy to sell Coopers, as he makes more profit, but would rather have a happy and satisfied customer and no claims. Living in the country, word of mouth is your best advertising, where as you buy them from a tyre dealer in the city and they are only after one thing, profit and could not care less what happens when you drive away.

Just what I have seen and been shown.

Cheers

No Mark, I didn't look on the internet prior to purchase, it was my first 4WD & the tyre service recommended them.
It's very easy to flippantly remark "Nuff said", but that doesn't excuse their attitude to claims.

The upside now is, you have them & I don't!

Well......." light the touch paper and stand well back" :-o).......just to add......as long are the class of tyres used are suitable for the intended purpose, I think the biggest factor in overall performance is the driver............taking it easy, dodging the nasty stones and adjusting pressures as required can all add greatly to reliability. While I bought Cooper ST's (for the first time - always BFG before) I agree that their warranty is a joke - but I knew that already.
The ST's have specs that are just as good as the BFG's so I thought them worth a try (at $50 cheaper apiece than BFG in the Alice). If I need to gaze lovingly on some BFG's, I've still got a set on the van.
BTW - I was a bit aghast at the 'cowboy culture' in this business sector in the Alice (maybe I should have known :-o)........ re customer service and safe/regulation workshop practices ..........all I can say is 'stay with your vehicle and keep an eye on things' when tyres are fitted !

John,
If they were within the 5 year period.
Waiver 2 would be you were using the wrong tyre pressures.
Waiver 3 would be you were travelling too fast.

I don't think you would have much hope from Coopers.

The best guarantee I ever had was the (now discontinued) beaurepairs damage insurance on my Goodyears.
I had 2 replaced, but they do deduct milage travelled, and charge for balancing. I was very happy with this.
You only know how good an insurance policy is when you claim.

Cheers,
Bill

Why do you think their warranty only applies in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane!

Their latest STT is a very good tyre, but all the rest have thin sidewalls and stake too easily when you do desert travel.
Their advertising is over the top - they sponsor too many people to say good things.
Their warranty is almost unclaimable.
They can't spell "tyres"
And there's a lot of people who's ST's chipped badly and were blamed for mistreating them.

Compare this with Goodyear who don't offer any glossy warranties or advertising, but I know of 2 instances now where tyres were replaced for delamination which could easily have been blamed on the overloading or the severe conditions the tyres were operating in. And Bridgestone have replaced tyres for friends of mine when tyres haven't met expectations.

Or as far as warranties go, Bob Janes lifetime road hazard warranty (on Allrounder car tyres) and Beaurepaires puncture warranty (on Dunlop and Goodyear 4wd tyres) leave the Cooper warranty for dead.

But credit where credit's due, the Cooper tyres give good mileage for those who don't leave the bitumen.

We used Cooper ST/C's and destroyed 3 within 1000 kilometres due to weak side walls.

I was happy with the handling on the bitumen and dirt but they are no where near as strong as they make them out to be.

As for complaints.... yes there are more complaints regarding Coopers then any other brand and this may be because they sell more then any other brand.

The other sad thing is the amount of advertising and personal endorsements they do.... rumour has it that some of the people doing the endorsements are receiving 6 figure $$$$$$ bonuses.

We have since gone to Toyo Open Country M/T's and can not be happier..... except they don't make a size to suit our new 4x4.

John,
A friend had a similar situation a couple of years ago & could prove that they were almost out of warranty at purchase time. Took Him a lot of ranting raving etc. but in the end Coopers replaced the tyre AND paid for the vehicle repairs. Over $5000.00 worth. You have just got to push the right buttons I guess.
I would be going to the State distributor for whatever State you are in as a starting point.
Mike.

John T,
Your nephew has both Statutory and Specific warranties related to the purchase.
The published information related to Cooper Tyres in Australia has specific warranties related to Date Of Purchase time limits. These are 72 months specifically for manufacturing faults. The tyres would therefore require independent engineering evaulation and related findings of fault prior to initiating litigation by way of a statement of claim. These actions are best taken in the Federal Court.
The implied warranties related to the old Trade Practices Act now the Competition and Consumer Act are quite onerous in respect of franchisees and their warranties for goods sold.
These goods not only must be of an acceptable quality they must also be guaranteed that they are reasonably fit for the purpose disclosed and intended.

Clearly tyres that delaminate during use are of questionable quality and if fitted by the dealer are also subject to purpose disclosure terms.
Your nephews insurance company legal office may have an interest here in relation to the above.
Hope this helps.

ok - seems theres some porkies getting told and mistruths being spread

first of all

porky 1 - the tyres are warrantied from date of manafacture
- this would be an illegal clasue and is in fact specifically NOT the case according to coopers website they are warrantied from date of purchase of course

porky 2

the tyres are only warrantied in Melbourne Sydney and Brisbane
- not so the milage GARANTEE only applies to soccermums on the east coast

but manafacturers waranty lasts anywhere for the life of the tread

now im not saying they dont try and squirm out of any of this but if someone want push to go to shove, this is the firt place you would point

Cooper’s Manufacturer’s Warranty
What is covered and for how long?
Cooper warrants to the original purchaser that if a Cooper tyre becomes unserviceable in private vehicle use as a result of a defect in workmanship or materials during the tread life (see definition), it will be replaced as defined below.

Tread Life
When the tread becomes worn down to 1.6mm (shown by tread wear indicators moulded into the tread grooves) the tyre is worn out and this warranty ends.

Replacement Charge
The replacement charge will be determined by multiplying the consumer’s original purchase price by the percentage of original tread depth worn from the tyre. The consumer must pay for mounting, balancing and any other additional charges, or the acceptance by the consumer of a higher priced replacement tyre.

What is not covered?

This warranty does not cover tyres that become unserviceable due to:

Conditions resulting from road hazards, such as cuts, snags or punctures.
Conditions resulting from improper installation, wheel misalignment, or tyre/wheel assembly imbalance.
Conditions resulting from consumer damage, such as improper tyre and vehicle maintenance, misuse, abuse, accident.
Passenger car tyres used in any commercial application.
Ride complaints after the first 1mm tread wear.
Ozone or weather cracking on tyres over four (4) years from date of purchase OR tyres that are worn to 1.6mm tread depth or more than 72 months old (based on date of purchase) whichever comes first.

Thanks for all your replies. My post was not intended to indicate if Coopers are good or bad tyres. Those of you who have had a good run from them - well good luck to you. It doesn't matter what you buy, some products give good service, some don't, but when a product fails within an inplied warranty period, it is not too much to expect that the warranty be honoured. It's as simple as that. BTW, my nephew lives in Brisbane, is an experienced driver and with his young family on board, was not travelling too fast. Even if he was, do Coopers self destruct over a certain speed?
