Hi, we are doing a trip up north from Melbourne and thinking of stopping at Lake Awoonga for a bit of barra fishing, my questions are, do I do guided fishing or do I take up my Porta-bote and do my own thing any advice would be apprciated. "note" I have never done any barra fishing in my life.

A guided trip at Lake Awoonga is well worth it, although they have been pulling some monsters out of the Boyne river lately (a few hundred metres down stream of the spillway at night).

Rod Harrison (Harro) does guiding up their and what he does not know is not worth knowing. If you are serious about getting a big Barra give Harro a call. I will send you a pm with his email addy.
Good luck Pete

Take your boat.....much more fun...and cheaper.

We are by no means good fishers either but we used to live there (just down the road from "Sir Kev") but we always had fun on our own. And that way you can use it at other placed too.

Call into Calliope river too.....can lauch the boat there as well.

Hi Julio,
Take your boat, but it would be well worth your time and money to use a guide to learn the how, what when and where's!

Lake Awoonga can be a tough lake to fish, even for experienced barra fishermen.

Use a guide and give yourself a good head start for you northern fishing holiday :-)

Cheers
Alex

Another place to cast a lure up that way is the Fred Haig Dam (Monduran Dam).

This spot is about 20k north of Gin Gin, and about 5k off the Bruce Highway.

Some big fish have been taken here over the past two years - but there's a hell of a lot of water!
