HI,
We are going round and round in circles looking at purchasing a camper trailer and we either find a tent we like Or a trailer we like. We cant seem to get the whole package in our price range
We really like the xtrail
Ranger they offer a 12ft side fold Poly Canvas tent
from what we can find we know poly canvas is 50/50 poly canvas BUT..
What we are trying to find out is what exactly is this. Is this just rip stop and called poly canvas for marketing Or something different again
We have been hiring camper trailers to try them out first and were not happy with rip stop as it lets too much light it and the kids wake up at the crack of dawn.
Plus the canvas tents are better in the heat
Hoping someone can help
Thank you

Hi Guys,
"not happy with rip stop as it lets too much light it and the kids wake up at the crack of dawn"
Seriously guys this the best part of the day.
We've been camping since the eldest was about 4 and the other two since they were babies. Yeah, I know sometimes it can be a pain, but at this time of a day the world is just waking up and the kids get to see heaps. Whether that be at
the beach or
bush camping.
We use to put a silver tarp over the top for longer stays which made it not so
bright and a bit cooler as
well. Than again we had a blueish coloured canvas.

We have a 2 year old and a 3 year old boys. I love the mornings this is why I want them to sleep in so I can get up and enjoy 5 minutes piece to myself
Yeah we have been looking at campers for so long now this is how fussy we have got...

I can understand the 5 minutes to yourself it's
heaven sometimes.
A tarp(wwith the sown in 'D' rings) over the top will help with the heat as
well as the light coming through. This what we had as our setup
I know it's more poles, ropes and pegs, but they do make a difference. To help with cooling of the roof, use the bladder out of a wine cask. wash them out, dry them and blow them a up, not tilt they are hard just enough so they will take the weight of the tarp off the canvas. This helps with air being able to move between the tarp and canvas.
A mate with two
young boys, even now at 4 & 5 you can hear him trying to keep them busy at dawn break, and it doesn't matter how dark it is.
Borrow a tarp if you can and see how that goes.

Yes 5 mins and a coffee in the morning can make all the difference!
Tarps are a great idea for keeping the heat off, we have a huge one which we used to use over our tent. We noticed quite a few of the camper trailers now come with a tropical roof system attached so it just folds back with the tent

"tropical roof system"
What a good idea these are.
I've a couple now and asked the owners what difference they made, they've been happy with them.

I'm not familiar with the Xtrail
Ranger, but poly cotton canvas does not necessarily mean rip stop canvas. Have a look at the canvas and if it has small square patterns on it, then it may
well be rip stop. Ask them where the canvas itself is made.
You can minimize the amount of light in the morning by buying a thicker canvas. I believe most of the expensive camper trailers and tents use either Wax Converters canvas or Bradmill canvas.
Mine is 15oz Wax Converters canvas and it blocks the light out pretty
well. Even this is a poly cotton blend (52:48 I think), but is heavy and very durable.

Should also add that my tent is beige on the roof and dark green on the walls. The dark green keeps out the light better than the beige.
I've only recently upgraded to a camper trailer, so much of this is fresh in my head. I'm pretty fussy about the canvas, so did a fair bit of research into it. I'm not sure what requirements you have for your camper trailer, but I do know that Customline and Camel use Wax Converters DX12 canvas. There are many more campers that use this canvas, some 15oz all round while others are 15oz on the roof and 12oz on the walls. The military uses canvas made by Wax Converters, but I'm not sure if it's the exact same one.

We were talking about going the darker colour last night to help block a little more sun light.
The tropical roof Or tarp will keep the tent cool so a darker canvas is not going to be a problem
We have looked at both the Customline and the Camel - both look good.
The problem we have is being in WA there are none over here that we can go look at
WA made trailers seem to be more expensive and you get less for your money???

Fair range out there these days isn't there.
Have a look at this blog on tents by Member-Cuffs. It might assist in giving some insight into tent construction and fabrics.
Buying a tent

Hi Trev and Ness - the caravan and camping show is on this weekend isn't it? Thats where we were able to streamline our decision on a camper. Walked through every camper set up there was and got to
check out things like how hot the tents were, how much ventilation they had, felt the canvas, saw how much light they let in etc. We found it hard looking at specifications on screen or paper= started to get really confused. Seeing them in the flesh so much better.doc.

Yes we are planning on going
I think we have been looking into things for just too long now
We have been told that often companies showcase trailers which are not online yet coz most of the companies there we have already seen Or are out of a price range
Fingers crossed
Thanks everyone

Trev and Ness, If you find one you like, but it seems a bit out of your price range, have you considered buying an ex rental? Some companies that hire them out willl sell their rental units after say 1 years use and you can pick up a good deal that way. doc.

just in your defence, I have three boys, 6, 3 and nearly two and as much as day break is a great time of day the whole
camp ground knows it when the boys are up so a few more minutes past dawn isnt just for us, its for everyone.
ps good luck, I think my kids can sense even the smallest amount of light changing. nothing will keep them asleep....
bring on the coffeee.
