Leaving van behind to travel the Gibb River Road

We plan to travel the Gibb River Road when it opens as well as to Cape Leveque and would like to leave our van behind and tent it during that time.

Two questions - we'll be arriving in Broome and would like to leave the van behind to go to Cape Leveque for about 4-7 days. Can anyone suggest where to leave it for that time? We will need to leave it on power as I have heaps of meat in the freezer.

For travelling on the Gibb River Road - again, where could we leave the van on power for around 3 weeks?

We think we have a few options...one, do the western half of the GRR and up to Kulumburu and then double back to pick up the van. Travel the black top to Kununurra, leave the van again and head back and do the eastern half of the GRR.

Or, is it better to leave the van somewhere, eg Broome, Derby, or Kununurra, then do the whole GRR and then return to pick up the van again. I understand this option will have us travelling the blacktop twice.

What have others done if you leave your van behind? Does anyone have suggestions for where to leave the van, or perhaps some other ideas?

Leave your van in Derby, on power at the park.

Go up the GRR and veer right to Winjana Gorge for your 1st night, stay there for 2 - 3 nights and you can explore Tunnel creek from there as well without breaking camp.

After your're happy you've seen all that, travel out onto the black top and take the bitumen all the way to Kununurra, overnight at Fitzroy lodge for something a bit fancy. (you pass the bungles doing this so if you want to see them as well, go in because a caravan is no good to you on that road!!)

After you reach Kununurra, look around re-stock whatever, take the GRR from that end and head back toward Derby doing the greater GRR.

Make sure you allow plenty of time aound Elquestro Station. (At least 4 days, more if you can) there is plenty to do and see.

If you have no time schedule to stick to, great. But if you need to know any time lines, I'd suggest at least 3 weeks to see the best bits without rushing it. Don't forget Mitchell Falls and Kalumbaroo.

Stop talking..I want to go again now!!!!!

Thank you for your reply, Andrew. Your suggestions are good given that we don't need to leave the van at Broome which I wasn't keen to do. I would agree with you that Derby's better. I like your idea of the Fitzroy Lodge...must do the Bungles again, as well as the plan is to do Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu. Last time I was up that way we stayed at McGowan's Beach and unless there's anything better (which I'm unaware of), think we'll stay there again. Hope you are able to still get the fresh baked bread there too. As it's been soooo long since I was up there last, I didn't just want to do what I did last time, but ask others for their opinions, so thank you.

Our schedule is planned, but unplanned if that makes sense. Our turnaround point for this trip is Cape York, so will take as long as I can squeeze for this Kimberley leg. I've just ordered Ron & Viv Moon's new edition of the Kimberley Guide which should be delivered next week.

Not wanting to make you envious of us :-), but if you're ever bored and want to know how things are going when we eventually get up the Kimberley we have a website - http://grantandlinda.wordpress.com/

As soon as the road is open, we'll be there!

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Headed along the Gibb took in all the sights over 10 days up to Michell Falls then down to Fitzroy Crossing back to Kununurra picked up the van then headed to Derby for a few days did Horizontal Falls day trip but wished we had done the overnighter then headed down to Broome.

Solar to run the fridge hey - you can't have the power guzzler that we have! It's a Dometic 186 litre 3 way fridge that absolutely chews up the power, drawing 8 amps on 12 volt. Even with 3 solar panels on the roof totalling 300 amps, there wouldn't be any way that it would keep the stuff in the freezer frozen unfortunately - that's even on the lowest setting.

Out of curiosity, where did you leave your van in Kununurra?

Glad you enjoyed the Horizontal Falls - I did it for a milestone birthday 3 years ago and it was the experience of a lifetime for me. At that stage we didn't know you could overnight it and really kicked ourselves when we found out on the boat....next time :-)

Hi Tom, we have a NT Pajero pulling a 21' Traveller. The van has a raiser kit on it but is not in my opinion, suitable for the GRR.

Choco, the Traveller van has a reasonable name, a lot of the roads in the N W
are maintained so well you could take a Jayco on them, It's the old adage reduce your your tyre pressure, drive to the road conditions( take it easy)
and slowy travel along. a uhf radio is a must it allows you to talk to other travellers.
As to the Pajero I haven't a clue.
Be prepared to take your time and move over for the Drag Queens!

Hi Chocoholic

A wise move not to risk you van. You never know what condition the road will be in from week to week (parts of it if not all). However if when you get to Derby everyone coming off the road says it is all smooth, you could re-assess your plans then. You could then leave the van at Drysdale River Station to go on to Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu.

I agree Derby is an ideal place to leave the van to do the loop, but question the need to keep the fridge running. It would probably be cheaper and safer to leave it stored without power. I'm sure you could arrange your supplies to shut the fridge down and re-purchase.

Alternatively you could do the loop from and leave the van at Kununurra where the shopping is good and fresh produce reasonably priced to re-stock.

When do you plan this trip? Your comment "as i have heaps of meat in the freezer" seems current, but the roads are closed now.

A full loop, and as said take in Purnululu as well as Geikie Gorge on the highway leg, would be far better than going in and out from both ends of the GRR, although on the eastern side you could go in only as far as El Questro. I still think it better (and quicker) to do the double up on the highway than on the GRR.

As you talk about doing the highway section twice, i take it you are travelling on into the NT?

Another alternative for the Cape Levique trip is to take a guided tour for a couple of days and save your vehicle.

Choco,
If you have read some of previous posts the only caravan your that you will be
lucky to see on the "off road roads' are Bushtracker,
We travelled the area in 2007 and the only Bushtrackers we saw were camped with us at Middle Lagoon x3 who took off to-gether to do the Gibb River Road(safety in numbers?).
Have a look around at other forums and make your judgement based on their
reports.
By the way the next Bushtrackers we saw were leaving Kingfisher om the Qld
Border.

Hi Motherhen & Tom,

We sat down with the map last night and have also taken your feedback into consideration. We have agreed that the van won't go on the GRR - we still have another 8 months of our trip and don't want to afford anything going wrong.

Also agree with you that doubling up on the highway will be better than doubling up on the GRR.

Now just to eat lots of meat so we can turn the fridge off and store van!

Appreciate your feedback.
