Roof baskets

Hi, Just bought a roof basket from repco for our trip which we're going on in a couple of weeks.. Was planning on carrying the canvas walls from our camper trailer & 2 kids bike laying flat as possible.. Would like to know how people secure these down, would those ratchet tiedowns be good for this ?

cheers Don

Just some cam-lock tiedowns or some good occy straps if the weight isnt too much (and you'd be restricted to 50 or so KG anyway with the rack)

Hullo Don

I would strongly suggest you use rated ratchet tiedowns

Cam straps and/or ocky straps just do not cut the mustard in terms of their low safe working load.

Most (all?) states have legislation about the need to secure loads carried outside the confines of a vehicle

Any method you use must be able to withstand the forces associated with a rapid deceleration. Unlikely - yes. But just like wearing your seat belts.

If in doubt, take the time to imagine yourself in a Coroner's Court trying to explain why you decided not to secure your load appropriately.

Cheers

Don,
Also make sure that the basket is well secured to the rack bars. A few I have seen only have small plates holding them on. True the load holds it down normally but when you hit bumps the force lifting the basket can be big. If only a few relatively small wires are all that is holding it down then they could easily fracture on rough tracks.

Have a good trip.
