is that possible? Do they allow it? Just thought it might be better than plodding around 9/10 kms on me poor old feet.

Also, at theYulara campground, is there a facility for dog-minding like at Adels Grove or will we have to do the sunset/sunrise snaps in shifts?

Advice appreciated.

you can walk around the rock but dont recall anyone cycling around. It is considered sacred ground by the Aborigines and I think you need a guide. I was out there in Nov and it had changed considerably from my other visit about 10 years prior. A lot more restrictions and fences.

Hi Wayne; We did not need a guide in 2008, but saw no-one cycling.

Hi Steve; Dogs were permitted in the car park so long as tethered to the vehicle and water provided. This many have changed since 2008. As we walked around and came near a car park, there was a cacophony of dogs in all tones saying "I'm a bigger dog than you are".

thanks MH - I take it the car park is the area everyone clamours around for the photos? Is it close to the base of the rock?

swmbo wll be content to walk fido around whilst me & the two boys cycle around. It'll probably be our last chance for a major trip (our first to the rock) whilst they deal with scool exams. Going at Easter - just hope temperatures and flies aren't uncomfortable.

Hi Steve

The dogs weren't in the car park at the base of the climb, where we started our walk around (we did not climb), but they were in a car park the other side. I don't know if this was the only place they were allowed, but do check first as they may no longer be permitted in the car park at all now.

You can view the rock at sunset (although distant) from viewing areas within the Yulara CP.

Hi Steve

The official word is no dogs in the national park, and this has always been the case. I don't recall where we read about dogs in the car park (it was the same scenario at Kings Canyon), but it was from brochures of some sort in both cases, not just word of mouth.

Sharing dog sitting duties with others in the caravan park with pets seems the best option.

Hi Steve

We have see quite a few groups over the years cycling from Yulara and around the rock. It is mostly very flat to the rock and as flat as a billiard table around the rock.

As for the dog service, I can not comment sorry.

Cheers

Friends of mine cycled around the rock last July. We walked. They had to get off and walk where the sand was too thick to get through but mostly no problems at all.

The traditional owners highly discourage cycling up or down the Rock...skateboarding as well from memory... :-)

Hi Steve

there is a road all around the base of the rock so i see no reason why you can't ride around and then walk in close to see the highlights, its a long way though.
Dogs are allowed in the caravan park but they no longer have a dog minding center, we left our dog in the caravan while we were at the rock and Olga's.
I don't think you can take dogs to the car park at the rock as it is national park dogs not allowed.

Must be OK as there were some First Aid people there when we were in 2009 and they scoot around on bikes .... Or maybe First Aid is not contrary to Aboriginal beliefs yet !!

There is also a round that goes right around - but not being in close it isn't anything like the walk. We did both the full (easy) walk and the drive.

I am trying to find out a bit more about dogs.

Gidday Steve, as far as the bike riding goes, cannot see a problem, as there was no bikes in the ancient times, hence there cannot be any old tribal laws relating to such. ??
Re the doggy minding !! there should be a lot of vanners at Yulara at that time of year, and as we know vanners are a very friendly lot,! so why not ask if someone would like to doggy sit for a few hours, say at $10 per hour. I am sure that some would love to just have the company of the dog for a few hours [ i would ] and some others would appreciate the doggy sitting fee.
Just a thought !! Happy Travels [ and cycling ] Rgs dazren

thanks for the response guys & gals - we'll take the bikes and sedate the dog. Only kidding about the last bit.

I like the idea of the boys shooting down Ayers Rock on their skate boards - I did express concerns to the Mrs but she was more concerned about me attempting to tow the van up it
