Hi all,
We have moved over to the new systems as you already know but there is a strange problem and we are having a hard time trying to find it. It causes the machine to go away for 5 mins every 20-30 mins. I suspect it is either a hardware or Anti Virus problem based on research todate but trying to find a small error on the large machine is proving to be difficult.
Rest assured we are working full time on this and will fix it. The performance on the new system is really great when it works so we are close just no cigar YET. I have disabled all search functions so this will not work but the rest of the machine is running.
Sorry for the inconvience but the update will be worth it once we have it resolved.
David

A large hammer often helps fix problems in my line of work, give it a try.

My TV did that a while back - it was a faulty connection to one of the cooling fans causing it to happen as it heated up a bit........ (Prob not your problem though....???)

No the SQL box has also been upgraded and is performing very
well indeed - this system has also been upgraded is now SQL Server 2008 R2 x64.
Late last night we adjusted some of the server anti virus settings and the system has been so much better since. We do still have the occasional pause which is a worker process crash/restart cycle (for those techo's), the worker processes will auto roll over to a new one unless they crash in which case the whole server/site process dies - it takes around 2 mins to start up again but we have multiple process running yet they all die at the same time - so it is like iis falls over. Anyway we are almost at the end of the problems so I have been able to start restoring
services that I have stopped.
Search in the
forum is being worked on now and a new system will hopefully be up and running by Monday. I have sorted out a whole new
shop search system and this appears to be working
well in the
shop system so will roll this back to the
forum and see what happens.

With so much free information available on the web nowdays I would be very peeved if I had paid to join this site then had to put up with all the downtime, go-slows etc.
I think a lot of this site's problems is the advertising pop-ups and money making stuff that bogs it down.
Any other non profit sites run without issues.
Cheers Neil

Geez give the Site Owners a go, they are doing there best to improve their system, the Caravan and Motorhome
forum was down for nearly 12 hours when they did an upgrade recently, and it still has gremlins every now and again.

Ah Dazza there is always someone.
Now Neil we are in the middle of a 50,000 email newsletter send right now, There are over 1650 current active sessions one the system at this exact second, we are rendering nearly 5 pages per second at the moment with more that 2000 hit requests per second (there has been over 25,000 users on the site today). I wish it was just a a case of the ads being a problem but without them how do I pay the hosting charges. It is easy for sites without traffic but a lot harder to serve hundreds of thousands of pages per day. You may no believe it but the
forum is only one part of ExplorOz there are over 250,000 pages of content in our management system so the serving and management of this system is a full time task.
Hey and guess what you do not have to pay to use it. If you pay you get less ads, what more can I offer.
The only reason you are even commenting is because I come clean about our issues, I could not respond or tell people about the problems and pretend that everything is fine however I prefer to run as transparently as possible and let everyone know about the good and the bad bits.
Have a great weekend.
David

Server hardware, Microsoft licensing and running costs (power cooling etc) are not cheap. I imagine adds and memberships help but there are still upgrades, repairs, maintenance that goes with it all.
I've found 99.9% of the time I have no problems getting to the site. (with the exception of the occasional upgrade of course.) System upgrades are part of life. And without having the resources (hardware and software) like a big international company I can imagine this isn't easy to do.
I say good on the sysadmins and keep up the good work.

Only a small thing Guys - but when you call up the
forum default page which lists all posts , the text in the headings has a very anemic light blue colour - looks like this is lighter than before ?

Agree Robin,
hard to read. A darker blue would help.
