We are planning to go to Lake Eyre from
Broken Hill via the Gammon (Nth Flinders) Ranges. Would anyone know the condition of the road that heads north from
Yunta on the Barrier Highway in SA through
Waukaringa-Nillinghoo-Curnamona-Frome Downs- Peter Fagans Grave-Balancoona to Arkaroola?
Also, are there any recommendations as to which has better camping and
views of Lake Eyre, comparing the site at
Level Post Bay (accessed from
Marree) v's the one at
Halligan Bay accessed from
William Creek? Finally, are both of these tracks into Lake Eyre from the Ooodnadatta Track in reasonable condition?
Any info on this would be really useful. Thanks, Poitr

Poitr, north from
Yunta is a good quality gravel road. Naturally this will be affected by weather and the number of road users and frequency of grading and surface works at the time you travel but it’s not exactly remote and has been very
well maintained on the times I’ve travelled on it (Last was 8 months ago).
SA govt road conditions should be able to tell you what the conditions are or road conditions page on the EO site. Personally, I'd ring the pub at
William Creek in respect to the
Halligan Bay access track as it takes only a lick of rain up that way to cause real problems as I found out on my way
home last year.
It will all depend on weather conditions immedaitely prior and during your period of travel (which you haven't outlined).
Cheers Mick

track conditions
this page will give you some idea of conditions. As said ring around the
places to get 1st hand info.
I am heading out there next month and will be doing that myself as we get nearer the date.
cheers Colin.

Gday,
Yes the road from
Yunta to arkaroola is good, WHEN dry.
It used to be my driveway when I was on Wooltana.
The roads up here (Borefield road area) are pretty rough and cut up at the moment due to the amount and number of rain events.
Level Post Bay is definatly the pick, but you dont actually
camp there. Camping is at Muloorina.
Donation camping, and I have never had any drama in paying triple what they (the station) asks. Brilliant.....
Trouble is road has been closed into there so often, most of it is fair but I now fear the few gutters will now swallow a car, not just your tyre.
Haven't been there for a few months, but every time we get 5 mm now, the roads are closed as they are saturated and doesnt take much rain to get them to a state where they get damaged. If it rains, be prepared to sit for a couple of days.
You will probably have trouble getting across to there from Nth Flinders and may have to bypass the Strez and head further south and then up. Some
places in the Flinders got 6-8 inches in a couple of days, only a week ago. That kind of damage takes a while to repair.
