Friday 1st October 2010 Lyndhurst
The access to Lake Eyre South from Muloorina station camp site has been posted as closed. Since it is about 60km in to the camping area on a dirt track to find that we wouldn’t be able to go on the extra 45km to the lake, we decided to aim for William Creek instead, where the 4WD track to Lake Eyre North (Halligan's Bay) is only today marked as open.
So we showered and left the campground at the pub, filled up with petrol at 148.5c/l (Adelaide was 107.7c/l and set out for Marree. One day the bitumen may be extended all the way to Maree, but for the moment two thirds of the distance is gravel.

I don't think they would have done any more since then...

No.

Check it out on Google Maps.

It will show Bitumen for a few k's north of Lyndhurst then dirt.

As P and JM said...many sections have now been bitumised but there are still some sections of dirt...well, graded and compacted clay...not really dirt.

Forget Google Maps...very outdated.

If the road is dry, You could take a Ferrari up there, it is that good.

But if the heavens open while you are halfway along it as we found last August then you had better be prepared to do some 4wding. Until the rain started it was great, 10 mins after the rain it was 6" deep and the causeways were 50 yard bogs. Several 4wd's with caravans in tow "camped" on some of the concrete causeways when we came through.
