On the 10th of March, 2010 I posted a note of congratulations to all the EO bloggers. On that day the blog section had its millionth hit. At that time 195 members had posted 1505 blog entries. Today the figure stands at about a thousand more blog entries and about 20 minutes ago, the Blog section had its 4 millionth hit. That’s an increase of 3 million hits compared to the 1 million for the 18 preceding months. For the statistically inclined that’s roughly 8220 visits to a blog per day, or 342 per hour.

As a bloke who reads most of them, there’s some great stories in there. Some of them even involve travel, some impart knowledge and expertise and some are even truthful!. What ever they are, they are always entertaining, they can be a great way to help plan a trip or even just to visit some of those fantastic places without leaving the comfort of the lounge room.

Great work everyone. Mick

Mick.... yours alone are well worth the visit and without a doubt the cause for an increase in numbers.........
I have one complaint, when directed to your "blogs" about something i get lost in the wealth of information and never find what i am looking for ..... because they are so interesting ..
To you, well done and dont stop ..
Cheers
Joe

982,500 odd hits on your blogs alone Mick.
That means fully 25% of those four milion hits are looking at your stuff :-))

Impressive numbers no doubt Mick, but hit rates bear little relationship to page views or 'visits'. Each file on a web page (could be 20 or more) counts as a hit, and search indexing also inflates the count significantly. Page views are a much better guide, although even those are rubbery.

However, as all publishers understand, CONTENT is king (or queen as the case may be), so individuals offering good info freely are an absolute boon to their businesses.

Well written blogs are (well, can be) the equivalent of the diaries of old and are perhaps far more valuable than many people realise. They can provide pictures of life, conditions, the environment, etc at a particular 'point' in time as well as insights into the issues and attitudes of people away from the mainstream media. That's on top of the obvious pleasure and value they provide to people living now and travelling through the same areas.

I agree, well done bloggers, wherever you are.

Bazooka,
The count Mick is referring to is a PV count as we attribute one count to the blog when the content is delivered to the browser. There are over 50 hits to the server for each blog PV but the stat Mick is using is a PV. You are right that Search Engine indexing attributes to PV and there is a large number of these in the PV stat, we have actual user stats and also unique browser stats however a search engine read of a blog is as much a real read as a user based read, Google and others cache these reads and some people read the cached results and these are not counted in the the recorded PV numbers so in the long run the numbers do get very close and for the sake of putting a number on the screen it is a fairly good number to publish (at least as far as a blog entry is concerned). For that matter the RSS reads are also not counted but the RSS service does not deliver the whole result. It is a funny world dealing with these stats as most people do not understand what it all means. You obviously have a great understanding and hence I thought I would pass on how the number quoted is recorded, and my thoughts on what number we published where.

Have a good one.

G'day David.

I reckon Mick deserves an EO Lifetime Membership Award.

I don't know if it'll make you feel any better Mick, but it's $1.50 in Brissy at the moment.

Dennis P certainly cheered me up........
