Gday Grant,
Your choice depends on whether you want to go off road or not. Places like Steep Point, Mitchell Falls, Bells Gorge, Bungle Bungles, Jim Jim Falls, some of the water falls in Litchfield Park need 4WD. If i was in your position id get a 4WD. 4Wd is not a must have, but with one you can go to more places. Thats my opinion anyway.
Have fun.

You cannot plan ahead where you will want to go, so having a 4wd will open up so many more options.

Also - when moving a van on 2wd areas is a lot easier with 4wd particularly when there has been bit of rain around.

If you can afford it - I would go the 4wd.

Hi Grant

Although we did not need to engage 4wd all that often, having it certainly opens up the number of wonderful places you can see as well as been an added safety feature if you meet muddy or sandy roads. Eg toTo visit Purnululu in the Kimberley, 4 wd drive only access and 4wd to be engaged to avoid track damager (and no caravans).

If you can, get 4wd and a tent, and be prepared to spend a few days away from the caravan.

A 4WD allows for more travelling options BUT it maybe a good idea to buy a van first so that your tow vehicle is legally matched in towing ability to the weight of the van.
