CSR Well 23 Fuel Dump

Hi All,

Good news for those planning a trip along the CSR.

New owners take over the Capricorn Roadhouse (tel: 08 9175 1535), as from the 5th of April and it will be business as usual with the fuel drops at Well 23.

all the best

Now that is good news!

I had heard that there was new ownership of Capricorn. Let's just hope they improve the facilities for the Truckies!

Hi Phil,

Many thanks for that. That is great news.

We are planning to do the trek in August.

How long do you suggest we allow all up and does it make much difference whether you go north to south or south to north?

Many thanks,

Sam & Lynne :)

Hi Sam & Lynne

I’ve have done the CSR three times in total, twice about two thirds of it and numerous smaller sections over the years getting to other places, so have a lot of experience on it.

If I were to do it again I would allow a minimum of 21 days on the CSR, so you can take it all in, enjoy the serenity of the place and not punish your vehicle and tyres by rushing the trip.

Which way is best. I prefer N to S because, the dune approaches although a bit steeper aren’t as long or as dug out as the southern approaches and because that’s the way the cattle were taken i.e. Kimberley to Wiluna.

You also should bear in mind that if you start at the bottom in say mid August, you’ll get to Halls Creek say mid Sept and it could be very hot. Doing it the other way will allow you to move south with the warming weather.

In addition if you come from N to S and suffer significant mechanical failure you’re closer to major towns to get help the further south you go.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

As the fuel dumps were discontinued due to reported theft problems, do people need the Well 23 fuel to last the distance, or will refuelling at the approx half way point of Kunawarritji (near Well 33) and pay the price suffice? If vehicles can last the distance, how much would be saved by ordering drum fuel rather than filling up at Kunawarritji?

Hi Motherhen,

Not all people are going straight up or down the CSR, some may come

in along the Talawanna from Rudall River NP
or from Gary Highway/Windy Corner to the east
or visit RR NP and come back to W23.etc

Therefore the W23 fuel dump may be very important in their planning.

cheers

We found the best way was to share a drum @ 23 then top up at Kunawarrritji. This minimises the total amount of fuel that has to be carried in any section & more importantly means less weight.

so this saves about 280km's before the settlement? Organising for our trip next year :)
I think we'll be ok with 230 litres for a GQ 2.8td but this does give some insurance.
