Inverters and RCDs

If buying an inverter when camping do i buy a portable residual current device as well .

No. As the inverter is not grounded an RCD will not help you.

Just make sure that any Inverter you buy has an Isolated Output, other wise the 240 volts will be tied to the 12 volts.

Major importers like Jaycar will only sell Isolated Inverters now, for safety reasons, but if you buy off eBay etc, you may end with the cheaper dangerous ones.
