I need to use two batteries linked together to give 18V. and I intend using a lead acid 6v and a lead acid 12v
I have a 12v c tek charger. Can I use the charger to charge both batteries if I have them linked together or do I need to get a separate 6v charger?
Thanks

I would charge them seperately, and a 12v charger certainly wouldnt charge them if they were daisychained to 18v

You need to charge them separately. Unless you can find an 18v charger.

You will need another charger for the 6 volt battery.
Unless your ctek has a 12 and 6 volt setting then you could charge them separately.

Hi Mfewster,

Why not use 2 12 volt batteries in series to give you 24 volts and make up an 18 volt power supply to supply your requirements. You can then charge both batteries together with your CTEK but only set up as 12 volts. In other words, parallel charging. This would require you to remove the device running on 18 volts while the batteries were being charged.

It all depends on how many amps you require at 18 volts.
A bit more info and we could give you some better advice hopefully.

Just a thought.

Cheers, Bruce.

Yep, got it, 18 volts for the EFTPOS machine = low amps.

G'day Mfewster,
Just a thought, could you use one of those Laptop power supplies from Jaycar or DSE (12vDC to selectable 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, etc vDC) may save a lot oh hassles.
Cheers,
Barry.

Sure. We are running a market stall. Used to be able to use 240v power but this is no longer available at the site. We need to run some strings of leds that run off 12v. Our eftpos machine uses 18v. We will use a small 12v and a 6v together but just tap off from the 12v for the lights.

is that the "round" plug on the eftpos.... i would look at an inverter for the eftpos, most probally cheaper....
May even be better for the lights as well, check to see if it is 12v dc or 12v ac...
Cheers

Lots of advise but nobody suggested a DC booster yet. I got them from E-bay and use one to boost 12V from a battery to 24V to run a portable drill to drive a winch. The output is adjustable, it has a 150W rating though for that it may need a bigger heat sink. Anyway, no problems running an 18V battery drill on 24V off a 12V battery.
Oh, it was around $25.-
If you can't find it on ebay email me for the URL.

If you buy another 6 volt battery you can then put them in series to make 12 volts and use your ctek charger to charge them. Probably easier than trying to find a 6 volt charger and cheaper also.

A more stable way of getting 18v is three matching 6v batteries.

Suggest just a 12V battery, and use an 18V laptop car supply to run the EFTPOS. Readily available from Jaycar or similar places, ebay.

Thank you again one and all. This forum and the assistance given are great.
Somewhat dazzled by the range of options you have all provided, I went and chatted to my local Jaycar. They have recommended the three 6v battery solution, or the 12v and one 6v as I already have a 12v charger and could therefore get a 6v charger so I could charge the 6v and 12v at the same time.
My sparky knowledge is low. Further comments?

Yeah, they don't have to worry about keeping 3 batteries charged, and they sell you lots of batteries and chargers.

Jaycar sell good Laptop Supplies that will put out 18 volts from 12 !

Assuming you have access to a 12 volt battery, this one can put out
3.5 amps and you only need to spend $29.95 !!!!
