Hello all,

Anyone out there driving a 80 series Land Cruiser 4.5 can tell us if this good enough to tow a 16" van and how it performs, its duel fuel? before we make an expensive mistake. we are novices so need any advice.

Hi Arnie & Judy,
Welcome to the site.
Your 4.5 will pull your setup with ease, use your gas for cruising and not pulling up hills.
Your 80 is more than capable of towing a 16' setup, but it will be heavy on fuel if you keep your right boot planted to the floor, you'll just need to adapt to driving conditions. There are plenty out there doing it.
Are you guys planning long trips, an around the block trip or just weekends away?
Going by your post,I'm presuming you haven't purchased your tug yet.

Hi Arnie & Judy,

I had an 80 series 4.5 before the current 80 series TD.

I loved that machine more than I like the present one.

The 4.5 will do your job admirably whether it is on gas or petrol, up hill or down dale. I towed our 2.2 tonne van with the 4.5 on gas everywhere.

I loved the smoothness of it, the quietness of it and its pulling power.

They are cheaper to buy than the diesel and cheaper to maintain.

If it is on gas and tuned properly your economy will be as good if not better than diesel. I kept meticulous fuel consumption figures and I proved the economy time and time again. With fuel being priced as it is at the moment gas is the cheaper alternative. Towing on gas I got 3.3 K per litre (diesel 5.5K/L) but at less than half the cost of a litre of diesel I was well in front.

Gas gets harder to come by the further away from the more settled areas, but so long as you are have dual fuel you can't go wrong.

My 4.5 had 316,000 on it when I got it and I then had gas put on it.
In a word,...... BRILLIANT.

If it looks good and the miles are good, go for it.

80 series auto 4.5 gas versus 80 series turbo 1HD FT

Country town running and holiday towing figures.

Petrol 80 on gas around town 4.5 kpl 16 cents per kilometre
towing 3.5 kpl. 22.7 '' '' ''


80 turbo diesel around town 8.6 kpl. 17.7 cents per kilometre
towing 5.5kpl. 27.8 '' '' ''

These figures speak for themselves don't they.

Fuel prices Kempsey / Port Macquarie area

Gas 75 cents per liter

Diesel $1.53 per litre.

Hi bruce,
Yeah, gas is heaps cheaper At The Moment.
I read somewhere not long ago that in 2012-13 the fed government will be putting an excise tax on gas, so there won't be a huge advantage for those that are installing gas on their vehicles. those that have already fitted will still just be in front, but it will take a lot longer to recoup your costs.
I had thought of Gas injection for my old girl, then I have also heard about Unleaded petrol injection for diesel as well.
Maybe if I was doing more kilometer per year I would think about it a bit more.

Yes Jon, that is the only dark cloud on the horizon.

However gas is a cleaner fuel so there ought to be carbon credits for using it.
According to a mechanic I was talking to the other day, it is kinder to engines and certainly keeps the inside of the engines cleaner. Its just harder on exhaust valves unless you have had hardened valves fitted.

People bag LPG but there are tens of thousands of cabs out there proving them way wrong every day and every night.

I recently had my 1HD FT (gas over diesel) completely rebuilt and the inside was the cleanest I had seen in any motor. The lobes on the crank were as shiny as if it had just been manufactured.

The recent oil changes prior to rebuild were as clean as you would want in any engine and I thought about extending the changes to 10,000, it was that clean. The engine did not need rebuilding but I had decided to do it as I was chasing that rotten 1HD FT tick. Did not succeed in getting rid of it. Another long story.

Now 100 percent sure it is an injector. Previously spent $3500 getting pump and injectors done to get rid of it but to no avail. Peeved off is an understatement.

Bruce has nailed it.
You should also factor in a valve adjustment every 40k as the lpg is hard on the exhaust valves.
I have a Unichip on mine with Dual mapping so when running on lpg the tune is set for the higher octance of lpg ang actualy runs 5kw more power on lpg than std ulp,

If your after a good 80 set up to go i'm open for offers.

Interestingly Rob my 80 had bad valve stem seals such that it blew a little smoke at start up.This is a common problem with 1FZ FE engines and I reasoned that if I left it alone the oil (carbon) leaking down the valve stem would only harden the valve and counteract the effect on the valves.

So I never had them repaired and I never had a problem with valve adjustment there after.

Mind you I had it for 2.5 years before I put it into a tree. Long, sad story.
Hurt all the more because I loved that machine.

My valve stem seals are the same and i run flash lube .
I do all my own sevice work the valve clearance was spot on when the lpg was fitted at 140k and with in 60k they were on bottom tolerance.
the problem is the valves are all shim adjusted which is a real pain the ar's.
and time consuming job.

I think alot of people are unawere of the checking and adjustment or just don't care and drive them till somthing goes wrong,ie start to miss and run rough.As to pay a mechanic to ajust the valves just at a guess at least $600+

Hi Guys

Its a great car and great tow car if its all working correctly - although you did not say which model , presume its auto full time 4wd versions.

The auto ones are pretty thirsty and a mate had one on gas , the early type gas vapour system where gas is put into the inlet , and like so many the gas system let him down.

He converted it back to petrol only and got his range back and is happier now.

Ensure the head and valves are checked in good condition , worth knowing that toyota never warranteed it for gas unlike Nissan used to do.
