Non-iron Camp Ovens

I am trying to find out where I can buy a camp oven that is not made of iron. My wife has a blood condition that keeps adding iron to her blood so she can't eat food prepared in any kind of an iron cooking pot.

I would appreciate any advice available. I have searched both "aluminium camp ovens" and "alloy camp ovens" on the forum but found nothing.

Thanks for any help forthcoming.

With all due respect, I've heard of aluminium supposedly leaching from cooking pots but not iron.

Maybe chelation therapy could help

Hillbilly camping make spun steel camp ovens..

the myth about aluminimum being bad came about through blood transfusions

using tap water which concentrated the aluminimum in water to levels far greater than could ever be achieved any other way

(dont remember the speicifics but it can be searched on the net)

any way it gave alzhiemrs like symtoms which proved to be temporary

so was born the aluminimum is bad and casuses alzeimers myth

although long busted many people wont drink out of cans or use anti persperint

Hillbilly Camping Gear is terrific and may be the answer to your problem. I have quite a lot of their products and have been very happy with all of it. Good blokes to deal with as well.

Hope this is useful.

Hi Kevin,

Assuming you are talking about cast iron or spun carbon steel, is your wife able to eat food prepared in stainless steel?

The ferrite or iron is far more stable in stainless and she would have to be extremely sensitive to be effected by it.

If she can tolerate stainless, any old large saucepan and lid without a plastic or wooden handle could be used.

Cheers,
Paul

There are two new aluminium camp ovens just listed on eBay, a 10" and a 12", made in NZ, the same as the above post mentions.
As some of the others mention look at the spun steel Bedourie ovens too.

The advantage of iron cooking pots has always been the even solid heat , ideal for stewing meat at lower temperatures or baking and bread making at higher temperatures. Hence the great results of a properly used iron camp oven or Grandma's old cast iron wood stove oven. I don't know how the alloy pots would go but I know nothing beats my cast iron skillet I use at home and I have some pretty flash stainless steel etc pans. I also have an enamelled iron grill pan which is terrific.

The French solved the problem of high maintenance iron pots by enamelling them! These are expensive to buy although they last for ever and cook beautifully. Cook shops often have them at half price on sale. You could look for one of a suitable size in secondhand shops etc. Your campfire might look a bit flash at first but the outside would soon blacken and no one would know your guilty secret!

Your best quick solution might be a Cobb Cooker or a Weber for outdoor cooking. Lynne

John and Lynne,

We have a lovely Dutch oven made by Chasseur, that we use for stews in the pub. Got it from Alice Hospitality, yes a bit expensive but worth it.

Also have a Tagine with a s/steel pan, very versatile & does great Morrocan.

Thank you one and all for your input. This gives me lots of leads to follow up.

The warning about not eating food prepared in iron cookware comes from no lesser person than my wife's specialist. She has great confidence in him so for us an iron camp oven is not on the agenda.

I was not aware of spun steel pots so will investigate them and also the lead on alloy. We have a small electric oven and a small BBQ but we have heard so much about the pleasure so many folk get from cooking in the embers of their open fire that we want to join them.

Thanks again for all the input.

Kevin another option for you is still use the traditional cast iron type but get an insert made of whatever material your wife uses to cook with at home.

That's a good idea. Just use it like an ordinary oven with the food actually in a smaller container of a different material. THat would do it.

Thanks for the idea.
