Did anyone else see the incredible program on 7Mate last nite (in
Perth) called Super Factories? This week's episode covered the Winnebago and the construction of their flagship RV the Vectra.... its takes just 12 people across 4 teams, just 2 hours to completely assemble the chasis. Incredible inside look at a super factory for sure...but did you notice there were no face masks on the spray painters, mufty clothing on the workers operating machinery, lots of odd OH&S things that wouldn't happen in Oz..
We're nearly convinced to hire one when we go to Western USA this Sept! (nah, just joking).

Gday David
Yes I have seen that program. Nice marble benches . One thing missing was
the pool table.

Hey, no problem ;-) ... I guess
the pool table would be an optional extra that could be arranged.

Dave,
I did see the show and it was impressive. I thought exactly as you did about the spray painting without masks. Day in day out that could make you pretty crook. The final exterior paint job was good. Again I don't know why they didn't use a spray booth.
Easy to be a critic I suppose. I wonder how the after sales service would be if things didn't work. You would have to be a competent driver to wheel one around.
A mate of
mine went over to USA and they hired a Winnebago, (a long time ago), and he saw another Winnebago towing a chopper, beats a Suzuki.
For an exterior paint job have a look at ---

Bill

We were at a free
camp site in NSW last year and saw a flatbed truck with a double cab. The flat bed had a helicopter on it.
The cab had enough room to sleep in and they (husband and wife) just assembled the blades on the chopper and used that for sight seeing.
Very cool.

No, the chopper wasn't that cool...
For a man of my vintage Richard Green(e) was the actor who played Robin Hood on early TV.

Must be money in taking nature photos.
That chopper would cost a bit to keep flying.

Incredible isn't it!
and apparently the
home helipad is a work of engineering genius, with some sort of automated convevyor to bring the chopper out of the shed and swivel it into position!!
I have seen the book featured on their website - my mum has a personally signed one of course - the pics are priceless and unique. makes you want to travel to
places all over again and see it from air - a totally different perspective.

i was amazed at how the side panels went together, had steel inside them, but didn't seem to be welded together in anyway. did i miss something (i was falling asleep on the lounge as i watched it and nodded off a few times...lol) or was the steel just placed inside the styrofoam and not joined together in anyway other way, other then the top layer sealing it in place?

Hi Michelle, (MM)
I think you should hire one just to rub our noses in it. It may also make a really good blog so we can see how our soft american cousin live (LOL)

Everytime I comment on blokey stuff people assume I"m David - even though I am careful to
sign off with my MM for Michelle Martin ;-) Ok, to be fair David makes me sit through his favourite shows - Super Factories just happens to follow his all time favouite - Man Made Marvels, which I find just as enthralling, or is it just because I'm so damn tired after intervals....
MM = Michelle :-)))

Just an aside on your trip Michelle.
When we went it was in September at the end of a long hot summer there. We went right up to Montana and as we turned south the weather started to close in behind us. Snow was a day behind us all the way back to LA.
It was still 40deg C in LA but was snowing where we had been up north.
If you are going that far north I suggest you do that first. And I can't over-empasise how totally impressive Custer's Battlefied was (in Montana).

I've been pondering your response for a while - now you have me rather worried! I had indeed notice a massive variation in climatic trends between the coast and vegas area but hadn't realised it could even be close to snow weather. I"ll take your tip, thanks... and yeah, ok I"ld give that Custer's place another look.... still going through the plans as we speak actually.

I thought they mentioned that the paint was electrostatically charged. That would mean that the paint would immediately head to the metal body being painted. And not any way near the operator.
Am i right?

Kinda hard to put an electric charge on fibreglass panels that the body of the vehicles are made of don,t you think , duh ,

How would I know duh.
Thats what I am asking. Maybe the undercoat was a metal based etch. I am not trying to be smart. Apparently you are.
I just think there would be a reason why the company would not use masks. I guarantee they are not stupid.
Duh to you also.

Apologies there whatever your name is. I was cheesed off because I was asking a legitimate question and you made me sound stupid.
And besides you can put an electrostatic charge on non ferrous materials. Try rubbing a plastic comb on a cat or through very dry hair. And then put a piece of paper next to it.

This is the type of people who are around these days. Abused me and when I apologised for responding in like manner Alloy c/t did not even have the decency to accept my apology nor say anything about how wrong they were.
Simply amazing lack of a standard of conduct which demonstrates that this person is polite, thoughtful of others and a valuable member of our Australian culture. Not the type of person whom I would share a cuppa and
camp fire with.
That feels better now. I shall move on.

Please explain how pointing out a fact , that being that the vehicles being painted are fibreglass and not metal somehow abused you , get off your high horse, if you actually watched the show and took notice you would have seen that their production methods including painting are vastly different from OH&S requirements as applied in Australia.

Ohh ,and by the way ,your anology of comb through dry hair creates STATIC electricity as any schoolboy learns , it does not resemble in any way a constant electrostatic charge as would be required for spray painting a METAL object.

I am not used to having "duh" added to any comment about a legitimate question. If you had left that off then all would have been fine. The "duh" changed it to a "you loser" and "dumb ****" type of comment.
That's why I was offended.
I fail to see why the analogy was not applicable. Electrostatic paint for non ferrous materials had been around for a long time. See link on electrostatic paint below. The video at this link below is a demonstration of electrostatic painting. Yes its a metal cabinet. However half way through there is a demonstration of how, with electrostatic painting the isn't any over spray. This is what I was getting at, and suggested why the staff were not using protective equipment.
As you can see. I did have a valid question. And you appeared to attack and denigrate me by completing your response with the simple word "duh", which I understand is an abbreviation for "you dumb twit" or "loser".
Enough said. Cheers.
