Hi, looking at the Confluence map there's still heaps of Confluences left to pick up.

I posted about this last in 2008 in thread 56048.

I've picked up three since then and I know Mick O and crew have picked up 3 in the GSD.

Stephen probably has picked up some more I would imagine.

Maybe, just maybe I might pick a couple up this year.

Heaps of unvisited Confluence still out there to be logged. Does anyone have any plans or has visited one lately?

Degree Confluence Project

Cheers
Alan

Hi Alan

It is always great to be the first to log a confluence, but I am not fussy. When we were over on Kangaroo Island recently, we visited the only confluence which involved a 4 kilometre return walk. Even though it had been logged before, it had been rearly 11 years since it had been visited, and then not recorded correctly for the requirements as set down by the Degree Project.

It was a great walk, great scenery, lots of wildflowers and native anaimals. The walk on the fire trail was OK, but the final 250 metre through very thick scrub was a challenge in places. I still need 1 more to reach 50.

When I mention to Fiona that there is a confluence to go to, see replies, not another ABC (Another Bloody Confluence...LOL)

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

So you have visited another 22 since we last talked about it - very prolific....

Sounds like Fiona is a very understanding woman lol....

I like how the project doesn't discriminate. There may be a stream, mountain, plain or thick scrub at the confluence, and seasonal conditions may mean that most will look very different than previous visits, if any.

The map is also a very good representation of where people travel and where people don't.

Cheers
Alan

Actually yourself and Mick O got me interested in this last year.

I had permission from the property owner of 25°S 139°E to go into his property as part of a Simpson trip, however when I explained the Confluence project to him in an attempt to get access to that confluence, he was not at all excited or supportive. I could not complain as he was very generous for our other needs.

I would love to pick up a point. Interesting stuff.

That's a shame Boobook, that the owner didn't share your enthusiasm. Don't worry I think there will be a few unvisited confluences for some time to come. Plenty of time.

G'day Alan.

I have my eye on one in the Kimberleys and perhaps also just over the boder. Unfortunately der navigator is not too keen on me walking out of sight of the Cruiser (even tho I carry 2 compasses and 2 handheld GPS's).

Cheers.

Hi John,
You'll have to get the cruiser as close as you can to the confluences then :)
Good to meet you at the book launch the other night. Sorry we couldn't chat for longer.

Good luck with them, still plenty fairly accessible too!!!

Cheers
Alan

Cruiser's already super scratched Alan. But that's not my main worry. It's destroying all that rubber that gets to me. I cringe every time I get a new sidewall stake. Isn't it amazing that 9/10 punctures are in the sidewalls :-(

Next time, weather permitting, I'll just trek it. Probably take the epirb as well, plus I've now got a satphone. Should be able to convince 'DN' that'll it be OK??

Plus take 5l of H2O is always wise.

Only a 20 kay round trip walk thru the scrub. :-)

Cheers.

Done a few myself and got really close to a few not recorded many of them, due to running tours at the time.

Hi David,

Maybe you could make one or more of them part of your tours depending on time frames etc?

Cheers
Alan

G'day Alan

Got to admit, this is the first I have heard of the 'Project', but it is one of the most exiting things I can think of right now!

When I investigated the web site, it peeved me to find I drive right past one (confluence) at Gundy NSW, every Christmas and Easter. Will look closely at the GPS when I am there in 2 weeks. Probably didn't notice, due to the fact I know where I'm going on that trip... no need for GPS.

I think we will get involved, but in a minor way, probably 're-visit' a few before we attempt anything remote, we are not experienced enough yet.

Thanks for the info and the website link.

Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,

It's amazing how many there are around the place and almost perfectly spread evenly :)

We got to within 38kms of an unvisited last year (24,127), however it would have taken a whole day to get there and back so left it be. In the meantime the one directly to the east has been picked up. They are all getting picked up ever so slowly.

It is pretty exciting, and a worldwide project too, Good-luck with your attempts.

Cheers
Alan

G'day Alan

38 klm!!!! I'm afraid I would have had to have a go at it, but as I am new to this, maybe the excitement has got to me!... lol, a whole day is a lot during a trek/trip.

Thanks again for the info/ link and encouragement, we will certainly have a go.

Cheers, Dave

That reply was supposed to be a follow up.

I just can't imagine the feeling of seeing all those zero's on my Garmin... amazing!

Cheers, Dave

I'm glad I got involved in the early stages of the project - when you only had to walk a few hundred metres from a made road to get to them !
