The family and I were planning a trip in July this year. Part of the trip included a crossing of the
Simpson Desert.
With all the water out there at the moment we are seriously looking at delaying the trip so we can be certain that we will be able to visit all the spots we would like to see.
My question is, is it OK to cross the simpson in early/mid october? July is my preferred time but just might not be possible. Would it be too hot. What are the flys like at that time of year?

We once crossed in late September. Temperatures were ok day and night.
However while the sand was slightly moist (from dew) in the mornings - by mid afternoon it was pretty loose and dry.
Didn't see a single vehicle in 5 days that trip.

Stew, I strongly recommend getting a fly net for your hat.

If this is your first trip to the Simpson I would really suggest that you stick to your original plan and go in July - October is much too late in the year - can be very windy and unpleasant. Locals do not travel out there then.
I think you will find July will be terrific.
As for flies - usually only around when there has been rain and there is green pick - they breed in the green shoots.
Either way - go out with an open mind and immerse yourself in it (the best place on earth - just my opinion).

Flys would be my last concern, that time of year your nudging mid 40"s in the shade and any small problems with your vehicle show up 10 fold.
