Sorry for giving so little info about the subject. The thing is, we are a couple from The Netherlands and are gonna travel through Australia for a year in October this year. After Australia we want to take the car, we drove around with in Australia, home to The Netherlands, starting from India. The car will have a Carnet the Passage, so we don't have to import the car. We try to contact serveral shipping company's, but with no succes. So any tip about the matter is more than welcome, this way we can figure out our budget and get in contact with a good company.

Thanks,
Martin

I dare say he is asking for advice from those that have done it before.

By the writting of you post I asume that you have shipped a car and maybe you could tell the OP how YOU went about it.
I think the OP has asked a fair question. Most people have never dealt with shipping companys or freight fowarders and would not know where to start.

No I haven't but there are lots of posts requesting help without saying IF or WHAT they have done themselves to fix the problem.

It is much better to provide too much info than ask a very broad question that tells us very little and have people going over what the OP has already done and not told us.

See the thread on Forum etiquette a few weeks ago

snoopyone,

Whenever dealing with Posts and Emails I always try to remember that not all are as articulate or conversant as myself (and I’m no author) and I tend to give most people a fair bit of latitude. You may be surprised to find that some people are bursting to ask questions on forums like this but are too scared of a potential tirade of criticism. I struggle to understand the aggression of so many participants of this site. You found time to criticise the OP but could add no value to his thread. He did not ask for you to spend time. He only asked for the advice of those that had.
As for etiquette!! Signing your name at the end of a post is always good form.

Regards
Craig

I was merely pointing out that a bit more info may help him get answers rather than have others go over ground already covered..

As for both of you, other than bagging me you have not contributed one iota to the thread either.
Pots and Kettles come to mind here.

I hope this is not too intrusive, but having moved cars internationally there are lots of direct and indirect traps. It would be useful to find out why you want to ship it. The reasons being a)are you selling it to someone, if so be very careful re fraud. b)are you moving overseas temporarily or perminantly, and if so have you checked with ATO re the effect on Australian "tax residency? and c)have you checked the import rules and taxes in India?

I think India still has some pretty restrictive rules re importing cars, but it is definitely worth checking. I recall that a car has to be less than 3 years old, imported from the country of manufacture and there are taxes and duties that add up to 100% of the vehicle's value!!! ( and from memory that is the new value, not current value). Please check this carefully though as my information is quite a few years old. Make sure that any quote you get includes these ( and a multitude of bribes to get your paperwork released in a reasonable time). Also I think all vehicles have to be imported through Mumbai, and there used to be additional state to state duties.

You need to get some good, specific adivce. Again I know this is not exactly what you are asking but there could be a few traps and / or opportunities and if you know the whole picture you may be forewarned. India has 50 times as much beauraucy as here, and you may not even see your vehicle for 6 months even if you pay the right bribes.

Taking a $5000 hit on the local used market might look very attractive once you know the whole picture.

Hope I am totally wrong these days, and good luck. Tread very very carefully.

Easiest way is to google "international car shipping". There is quite a few companies that have online quoting via email after dialling in your details.
You may have to try a few quotes to find out which city in Aust is the cheapest to ship from.
Probably best to find an agent who will handle all the paperwork and pay all the fees and include it in your price.

And couple of thousand will have to be factored in for "commissions' for the customs personnel, particularly if shipping into Kolkata or Chennai.

When I visited apple importers the ongoing commission was about USD2000 per container.

G'day Martin

We had a pair of Exploroz members and wives travel through Russia last year. I seem to remember they had to put vehicles in a container for shipping.

If you check out the blog section of the site, search for Russia, or something similar, you may find the members, and info you need.

Cheers, Dave

Gooday. In 2006 we utiliised General Cargo Forwarders (Australia) P/L to ship our troopy to Europe and return via a container. Cost was reasonable and the company excellent to deal with. They are mentioned on the NRMA website re sending vehicles overseas. Dallas Constantine was the principle at that time and was most obliging in every way, email address is generalcargo@connect.net
