I've have had a Globalsat BT338 for many years however the batteries kept failing as it sits on the dashboard in the sun. It also has a 12v power cable.
I recently bought a Globalsat BU-353 Mouse GPS off this site and it works pretty
well and gets its power off the Laptop.

I have the two that Richard mentions above also. Both are excellent quality and performance. In my opinion you cant go wrong with the Globalsat products.
One thing maybe worth a think is that the USB GPS will need to see a bit of the sky to work (only a bit) and if its in the USB slot in the laptop then that may be a little issue, hence why I got the GPS mouse, but give it a try .

My thoughts as
well but the website does mention an extension cable for the USB Dongle.

Does your laptop have Bluetooth? I've been using a Haicom Bluetooth GPS receiver for a few months now and it seems a good little unit. Not very expensive (under $100) and very good at getting a signal in poor locations.
Check out
here for an example. If that doesn't suit, get in touch with the people at
Johnny Appleseed. I've used them for all my GPS stuff and they're very helpful.

Hilux fan,
Please excuse my ignorance but are you using it as a straight GPS or do you have it interfaced with a mapping program.
Thanks

Bruce,
I've been using the Haicom GPS with an HP iPaq112. I'm developing a
CyberTracker routine for flora and fauna monitoring, as
well as using it with the
Memory Map maps I have.
