Which car fridge?? What do you have 'n why do you like it!!!!

G'day all, what portable car fridge is the best? My old 1994 Chescold RC1180, is still going strong after 17 years, it will be hard to beat - are the new ones as good or what is better? Please tell me about yours & why you like it, are any of them any good on 12V? that seems to be the weakest point of all, thanks in anticipation, hoo roo

Well Aussiedingo, after having had an 39l Engel and a 50L Waeco, I now have and love a National Luna 74l. You've started me.

Why? Where do I start.
-Stainless Steel inside and out.
-It's 2 fridges in one, a 34l and a 40l each with totally seperate doors, controls, temperature monitors and settings. So it's a fridge and a fridge, a fridge and a freezer, or 2 freezers. Even a fridge and spare storage when you are on small trips or coming home.
-It has tons of insulation and uses about the same power as my Waeco 50l except when the ambient temp is very hot, then it uses a lot less less.
-It has an auto turbo mode. When the voltage is over 13V ( battery charging) it goes into turbo mode.
-You can set the temp by the degree and it stays there plus or minus 1 degree.
-It has a single BD35 with smarts, to cool both fridges at different temps.
-It is rugged as hell, it was developed for the red cross to transport blood in Africa.

There you go, 2 seperate fridges with the power demand of one. About the same space as an Engel 60. Only downsides are it is pretty heavy in kg and $.

I'd never go back to an Engel ( noisy, really lousy insulation, electrically noisy for radio and super expensive to repair ), or Waeco ( ok but not great insulation, everything else ok).

Beer and meat at 2 degrees, cheese etc and vege crap at 7 degrees - keeps me and the wife happy.

Love it.

Well my 8 year old 40l Engel is as reliable and faithful as my Border Collie and he loves me.

Have never experienced the noise or poor insulation issues you mention.

Run mine on 1 and a bit and the temperature remains stable while the economy of battery supply is good.

The bigger the fridge, the more volts and amps you need to run it.

That is sort of true, but only if the fridges have the same amount of thermal insulation and electricals.

Yes Greendog, that is exactly the point I made in my"Reply" below. With the Engel on the floor of the camper we were sleeping on top of it, and the floor resonated the Engel vibrations. Your fridge in the Paj back is on carpet or rubber and also you probably not sleeping in the car.

But it is probably not a good idea to tell an Engel owner that his fridge is less than perfect! LOL

Cheers

Our old Leimack works for us - has fridge and freezer compartments and digital temperature control. With some careful consideration to its electrical requirements ( battery and wiring) it does what we require.

Engel for us, haven't taken too much notice of any noise, it can't be too bad, it has never interfered with any conversations or anything like that.
We have had ours for over 6 years now and had no problems with it.
Can't help you with other makes as no experience with them.

Cheers

Another vote for the engel our MTF45 goes all day with 12volt in the car, then for days on a 80 amp/hr deep cycle gel battery in a box for camping. 100watt solar panel keeps the battery going indeffinately whilst the sun shines.

Do you need a hearing aid to complain about the noise? I can't ever say I have noticed it, certainly quiter than the kids playing in the bush.

Insullation? I must admit I have had it in an engel cover since new and don't often leave it in the sun, if I have to I cover it with the silver car windscreen sunshade. Best of all the price as they are regularlly on special at BCF, Annaconda, Rays Outdoors, REPCO and any number of camping suppliers. They were 27 1/2% off RRP at rays only last month and 40 ltr was less than $950.

I think that possibly the reason for some experiencing noise and other not. with the Engel depends on where it sits. There is no doubt that the Engel oscillating motor generates vibration but this may only become noticeable when the fridge is sitting on a panel which can resonate. This was certainly the case with mine when sitting on the plywood floor of our camper. A Waeco in the same location made no noise.

I have a Waeco 40 Litre, have tested it on 12v : run for 72 hours at 2 deg (C) on 28 ahrs. (2 days 25 Deg C and 1 day 40 deg C.) Only opened a few times a day to get cans out. 50 ahr battery was still going strong when I switched it off. Fairly hard to beat that.

I'll be the odd one out here as I've got a Bushman, I've had it for 7 years and no troubles. We prefer its side ways lid compared to the Engel's end to end plus the ability to have two lid height. Its power is good also.

I will second the Bushman.

Mine is on a slide in the troopy and gets bounced around a fair bit and it has not missed a beat.

Has mine for 5 years.

G'day,
I'm putting in a vote for the Australian built EvaKoool. we've got four little lovelies and so therefore run two 47LEvaKools.
I like them as they have great insulation (same box as the EvaKool esky) and lids strong enough to use as an extra seat or to stand on as a step if required.
I bought the first one second hand and the next one new from the company. I have no association with EvaKool, but they're made in Caloundra and I've found the people great to deal with.
It is my thing to buy Australian made - jobs for the locals and all that.
Happy searching, you've certainly got a variety of opinions here!
Cheers,
Corrugate

I have a dinosaur Trailblaza 60L [post 1985]
Pros: Just works.
Cons: Thirsty c.f with the current compressors.
Changes: Modified the lid.
Wishlist: A side mounting drop-down/tilting carrier....its a PITA accessing the contents [unit is mounted on the tray].
