Hi All,

Hoping the forum can help,

Have a 1996 80 Series with a 1Hz Diesel + Aftermarket Turbo, have an issue where the 4b won't start.

Issue:
When I turn the ignition all I get is a "Click" rather loud from under the bonnet.
The engine does not turn over at all, just the "Click"...

If I try again it may start, sometimes takes 3-4 goes to get it to start.....

Cold or hot does not make a difference, can happen anytime.....

Need more info?

Anyone seen this before?

thanks

Bernie

Clean up your battery terminals or check starter solenoid.

Had a fuso bus like that Had to whack the starter with a spanner to get it to go sometimes

Hi Bernie,

I have the same problems with my current TD 80 and had the same problem with my previous petrol 80.

The contacts on the solenoid wear out more quickly than most vehicles and need replacing.

First up get the replacement parts from your nearest auto electrician and remove the starter and place in a vice with the solenoid uppermost. Then remove the 3 screws in the cover plate then withdraw the copper bolts/terminals then remove the contact plates. installation is reverse of removal.

They make upgraded parts so ask for them from your supplier.
Note that I asked at Repco but they did not know about them. My nephew who used to work at Repco put me onto them but he was a cluey sort.

See how you go.
If you are not sure check out LCOOL and see the section on 80 series starter motor problems. There is a good link to a site in there showing the problem and its remedy.

Cheers, Bruce.

Should have added it is one of the easiest solenoids to work on that I have ever seen.

Full marks to Denso or Toyota or whoever designed the system.

Hey Bernie,
As has been said, it's an easy job.
I did mine early this week, after having to push start my 80 for the last few weeks of our touring back home.
I had to get the parts from a local auto sparky, no one else had them, cost 10 bucks a piece i think, I also replaced the centre plunger too.
2 bolts to hold the starter to the bell housing, and only 2 wires need un-attatching.
Even I managed to do it

F.Y.I

Decided to go with "genuine" Toyota parts, will be replacing the solenoid contacts and the "thingy in the middle" (you know what I mean)....Don't ask the price..

Will give you an update, doing next weekend.
