Hi all...a few days ago my 50 litre waeco fridge freezer started playing up..wouldn,t
run on 240..but would work on 12 volt...after a couple of days wouldn,t work on either..so i took it to local fride repairer in
BROOME..he said because i had been running waeco through my 2.4 YAMAHA INVERTOR GENERATOR.. I HAB BURNT OUT THE POWER BOX....$460.00 LATER FRIDGE IS NOW WORKING...
Has anybody else had or heard of this

I've seen the 50lt Waeco have difficulties when run off a 2 kva generator........but it only blew the fuse each time rather than the power box.

Should run fine off a good gennie....as long as the gennie is running.....you didn't let it run out of fuel.....or start it up with the fridge connected ?? This can cause spikes and do all sorts of things !!.....maybe get someone to
check the voltage of the gennie to make sure it's putting out 240V ??

I agree with Gronk, a sinewave inverter generator should be as good as the mains, i run a Waeco 80L & 40 L of a 2.6Kv kipor inverter generator & so far have no problems.

i may be guilty of starting gennie in the morning all connected..fridge van & battery charger...but doesn,t inverter mean surge protected???

Doesn't matter a damn as the Yamaha and Honda inverter does not switch on till the mains voltage is stabilised.

Gronk brings uo a very good point about running out of fuel, i recently had major floods down here , so had to run off our pure sinewave gen for about 1 week. On day 5 the generator ran out of fuel just as the power load was coming on ( terrible timing ) and blew up the control board - so for safety of your gen roughly know how long your fuel consumption lasts for - and top up before the end of the tank - but remember to wait 4 - 5 min after turning off before refueling for safety

fridges should not be run of genies unless there is a surge arrester in place due to the differing power levels

"fridges should not be run of genies unless there is a surge arrester in place due to the differing power levels"
You read some dubious and wrong information here at times, and yours is in that bucket.
If the Danfoss module on the compressor was genuinely faulty you were damn unlucky as you can throw nearly anything at them. Think of the spikes and low voltage when vehicles crank, those with GMC type generators and you hear of minuscule Danfoss module failures. One component in the module that was not quite up to spec and it failed - you know what they say shirt happens. He sure gouged you a bit for the job.

as a carpenter that uses genies everyday and have blown up $1000 of dollars worth of
tools especially compressors which as you
well know are found in fridges the simplest and most effective way to protect your
tools is with a surge arrester. after cyclones we use our genie (a 8kva) to power one fridge in the house due to the power draw and we use a surge arrestor. dubious and wrong to you but common sense to others.

this is what i wanted to see...now just to.. make sure. i understand what i have read...when i start the gennie i let it run for a minute or 2..then plug in the van..
from one outlet and the waeco in the second outlet and it shouldn,t happen again
when we leave
broome we will be
free camping thru out NT and i really can,t afford this to happen often

No, just leave it all plugged in, start it up. The inverter does not switch on the 240V still the power is stabilised.

i have been reading the follow ups over and over...if you say to leave it all plugged in ...then i am still buggered if i know what caused the problem..and thats what worries me...i have not used a surge guard, because i believed the gennie had that built in

hi Again as a general rule we leave everything plugged in but turned off for approx 10- 20secs until you hear the genie running smoothly as this means the power supply is more constant. as the below response indicates running anything off a genie voids your warranty and believe me i have argued many times. good luck with your trip, maybe a good service of the electrical appliances due to age may help

I have a EF2400IS Yamaha and run at various times a Waeco an Engel, battery charger, airconditioner and microwave. Yamaha’s brochure states that it produces as clean as or cleaner than commercial power and is suitable for precision equipment or microcomputer controlled electrical equipment.
I don’t unplug them to start, the Waeco switches over automatically from 12 volt DC to 250. If any of these ever went up in smoke and were under warranty - I wouldn’t mention the genset to the repairer. They may blame it without reason.

after the initial shock at the cost..i asked what could have caused this..he asked do you run it on a generator..he also suggested running it through an inverter..
my generator is the same as yours..and has run my lap top..a/c.. microwave..jug, toaster..we have camped on and off in the bush for several days.. until the water runs out..i must point out that the fridge is 2 years old as is the rest of the set up
and this is the first major encounter we have suffered...$460.00 repair
all in all i should not be complaining..but i was told when i researched which fridge to buy.. engel versus waeco..i was told that all components of the waeco could be replaced very cheaply

If the fridge is only 2 years old why did you not get a warranty claim?

Interesting for the repairer to sugest using an inverter, why would you as you then would run it on 12v. The problem sounds like it was with the built in powersupply. The repairers only replace modules & dont repair the actual powersupply. The fridge should have worked in 12v whenthe unit failed & kept working. I would suspect the changeover relay in the powerpack is what has failed as they are a bit small for my liking. I dont supose you still have the replaced module? as it would be interesting to know what failed.

Hi Wayne,
If you took it to the
Broome WAECO agent, based on my experience with them I suggest you seek a 2nd opinion.

Your story got me thinking about your Waeco & its powersupply. Ive checked one out & theres nothing all that expensive in them. Im used to repairing SMPS in TVs. If you want to
check ive posted pictures & my thaughts on

Hi Wayne, If you do get it back & it looks anything like in the pics i would be interested in looking at it for you just for curiosity to see if its reparable & cheep. You might then have a spare. Daryl
