Hello All, A quick question in regard to 16 " rims that will fit a 60 series. Don't want to use Sunny's and I know that they will more than likely be 6" wide. I believe that one version of the cruiser came out with chrome steel wheels. Anybody remember which it was. Looking at a skinner tyre but don't want to go splits ( I know some say they are great, some say the opposite)

Just a side note, at the Perth 4x4 show (which was same old same old) the guy from R & R Bead Breakers was saying that he purchased a roadhouse/pub from last years profits. Not a bad bloke and strongly believes that you can make a good dollar if you are prepared to work hard.-he proved that.

Thanks

Mark

As far as I can recall those chrome 16 inch rims were also splits with the split on the inside of the wheel. I run splits on my 'old dear' and they work for me. Any steel rim, Toyota or Nissan stud pattern up to '99( I think ), will fit on to your 60 series.

Thanks for that Willem,
I know that this has been asked before on previous threads, but what is it about the splits that you like rather than running skinny one piece steel rims?

Mark,
I do a lot of driving around in the scrub. I am from the old school(read born in the 40's) and have been living with splits for a while. I know how to repair skinny tyres and they are easier to get off the rim. The tyres tend to be a lot stronger in the sidewall. If you do cut a skinny then you can do a bush job and a patch on the inside and/or a new tube and continue on your journey. Wide tubeless tyres aren't always available in smaller outback towns. Just about every station in Australia and outback communities(that is a broad statement!!) use skinny tyres on their 4by work utes.

I have had wide tyres on Sunnies over the years but they were on smaller 4x4's. As I upgraded to bigger 4bies I went back to skinnys and splits.

This answer isn't quite what you asked but I have given you my overview anyway :-)
Cheers,
Willem

Thanks Willem, I have decided that Skinny tyres are the way to go, although they don't look as "cool" and have sourced some 16 x 6 chrome solid rims from the GLX 60 series. I intend to put 750x16 Road Grippers on these (tubeless) which will mean that they will be able to be swaped with the splits on the trailer that I have. It will also mean that I can pick up 750x16 just about anywhere. This should give me a strong tyre that is relatively easy to change.
PS: My 60 series is a 1986 turbo diesel with the lot (including 490K under the belt) and people say I should trade up.... Simple answer- Why?
I cringe when I see $70K 4wds getting scratched down the side on trips.

Mark,
Road Grippers are as good a choice as any. They are fondly known as Telecom/Telstra Tyres. I run them on my trailer which has LC 80 Series split rims. You should get 40-50,000km out of them.

I have been going around in circles looking at upgrading to a newer vehicle but to date have not made my mind up yet. A mate of mine declared a while ago that after threescore years and ten why would you want to buy a new 4x4......not that I am there yet, but well on the
way :-)). An old bushie told me recently that the vehicles which last the longest are petrol engined with a 4 speed box......

my brother is running 80 series GXL rims on his 60 series. Needed a spacer initially to stop fouling on steering arm but has now had them offset. Look great, made from steel and best of all they're the same as mine so we've always got plenty of spares.
He lives in Perth and I can get him to drop in one day if you like (the 60 is worth a look on it's own)Allyn

Hello Allyn,
From my understanding (and I am no Tyre Expert) the off set is how far the rim goes pass the hub or not or another way to put it is does it make the vehicle track skinner or wider. If I am right (and that would surprise me) then how do you alter the offset and who does this?

Eric check out post #5483.

Mark if you're not in a hurry then we'll come see you in January when I am in your fair city. If earlier is desired then let me know and I'll see if the bro can drop in sometime. He has had rims offset as I stated (big $$$) but you will need to ask him of details.Allyn

Hello Allyn, Given the $$$ involved, I will more than likely go 16 x6 steel solid rims (chrome). The ones that came out with the GLX 60series (0r version of) I can get enough of these little buggers for the cruiser and the trailer and would be able to carry spares (if required) in the form of splits.
Your brothers cruiser must be something else (special).
