Wonder if there are any advisors out there regarding these 2 vehicles on my narrowed down list. Planning to buy a 2002 model of either. The extra space of the Patrol is not a requirement, just a luxury. Interested in comments re economy / engine capability / refinement / drive train / low ratio. I've read the corporate stats, now want a "users feel".
Thanks in advance.

Wils,
We got down to the same short list and went with the Patrol which we have had just over a year. We off-road tour and tow a few things, not sure what your intended use is. We found the Pajero to be noisy in the motor department and also the noise, vibration and harshness from the road was more evident in the Pajero. Plenty of grunt though. The Pajero is very car like on the tarmac road in comparison to the Patrol, which likes a more restrained carnering pace. Off the tarmac, the Patrol is the more comfortable the rougher it gets. I don't think there would be a big difference in Fuel economy, the Patrol gets 11's H'way, 14's in Town and towing. Fit and finish of the Pajero was definitely better than the Patrol.

Hi Wils,
I have a 2003 ST Patrol 3.0TD Auto, the car has been ok so far (22,00klm) with most of the klm's being long distance touring & 4wding.
It is very "truck" like.
Fuel Economy is reasonable - Best has been 11.08 litres/100klm - average is around 14.6 litres/100klm.
In terms of power, it's ok ! Not gutless, but just enough.
The interior is the worst I've ever experienced. It's very fragile, even a cardboard box in the rear will mark the fabric.
Regards
Phil P

I have just bought a 3.0 TD manual Patrol (2000kms now) and am very happy with it. The Pajero was not a consideration for me as I use my vehicle off-road (already fitted HF, UHF radios, 33" Coopers, dual batteries,
snorkel, GPS etc ) and the Pajero with its monocque body and independent
suspension would not be able to handle the off-road conditions I drive on long term.
However, if you plan to mainly drive on-road with limited tame off-road use, then the Pajero has a more car-like feel than is probably better for the daily grind (Note: a Pajero can perform off-road, but I would not want to be the next owner!!!)
Cheers
Mark

I've got 26,000klm on my 2003 3.0 GU Manual so far, not a problem anywhere, built like a brick sh*thouse. Couldn't love it more.
Go for it.
Josh.

I had the same short list early this year and went with the series 3, 3Ltr Diesel ST Manual Patrol after reading in 4WD Monthly tow test that the Pajero's rear end wanders a bit when towing because of IRS. I wanted something fairly stable as I tow a off road 18ft Van. The Patrol now has 34000ks and going great. Have been servicing it every 5000ks even though in the book you can do it every 10000. I do it for piece of mind and hope to get longer life out of the motor.
