When taking off from standstill it jumps out of high gear but will drive in low gear. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Hi,
Make sure that you have no mud etc built up around the transfer case lever stopping it from moving fully into the high range position just enough to make it jump out under load. Or possible a broken mount causing the gearbox motor to flex bumping the shaft out of gear.
Cheers,

Hi Dave

No mud/dirt built up and engine mounts and gear box mounts are fine.
Cheers

Hi
Not real clear on your description.
Is the gear box jumping out of gear or the transfer case?
How many klm's are on the gear box.
Being a 90 model i suspect a few klm!
I you are talking about not jumping out of gear in low range, ie less load on the gearbox, thus not jumping out, it will probably still jump out in low if you give it a bit of stick.
More than likely time for a gearbox overhaul.

Hi Rob

jumping out of high in the transfer case when you start from a standing start.
Did it a couple of times now does it all the time.
But will drive alright in low gear no matter what speed.
450k on the clock.

Hi Ian
Can't help you much there, more than likely something worn with those klms.
Try draining the oil to see what bits and pieces come out?
Unless it is something with the electric motor selector unit, probably have to remove the transfercase to inpect all that properly?
The transfer case can be removed from the gearbox in place in the vehicle.
How are the syncros in the gear box i know mine are stuffed at 220k.
And grates between 3/4th, fairly common.
With 450k guess it would be time for an overhaul?

Hi Rob

thanks for that = hardly ever used the 4wd high and low box. I did drain the oil not metal in the sump plug and also drained transmission oil and no sign of any metal, the gear box changes gears fine with no grating/noises just the high and low gear lever jumping out of high as you go to move off.

looks like I will have to pay someone - any recommedations?

thanks for your feedback
