Hi all,

Can anyone give me any info on the road to Surveyor General's corner. Is it accessible from the Olgas? Is it doable with an offroad camper trailer? From Surveyors I am looking at returning to the Stuart Hwy via Kalka/Amata/Fregon/Iwantja. Is this doable?

Any info would be really appreciated.

Hi Bowks
I can understand your interest in travelling that route. To the best of my knowledge, these are not public roads and you'll need permission to use them. I can't help you with your question about the Olgas to S-G corner but do know that the road from S-G corner to the hwy is fine for towing a trailer should you be lucky enough to get the go-ahead.

Thanks - the Thorny Devil was so gorgeous - posed for heaps of photos in the middle of the Gunbarrel. We've got the photo on our spare wheel cover which is bit dusty in this picture ...Megan

Wow! I'm really hoping to meet one on my travels. They really are the most bizarre looking reptiles - and I would agree that he is gorgeous.

We turned down the Mulga Park Road, approx 40 km from Warakurna, and Giles.
That was a very easy run
You will need permission, or know some of the locals, to usel the roads you want to travel on.

Would be a gr8 trip though.
Cheers

Thanks Bucky,

How long ago did you do the trip? Where did you camp or was the return trip doable in a day?

We were there in 2009

We bush camped behind some shelter trees, on the side of the Giles/Mulga Park Rd, not that far from the Len Beadell Marker. Our camp was a well sheltered spot, on the LHS heading down.

Have looked in all my points of interest, on GPS, but I did not mark it. ( rats !)

Easily doable in 1 day, from Giles ...

What we did was to do the weather balloon thing first at Giles, and after an hour or so, we headed off to find a bush camp on the way down.

Cheers Bucky

Thanks Bucky,

Really, really helpful info. Excuse my ignorance - haven't researched the area much yet - but what is the weather balloon thing at Giles? Is it anything to do with the meteorological station I can see marked on my very rudimentary map?

That's the one.
Well worth a look, very interesting place.
Also at the store on the way in, meet some fabulous Locals from the community, just up the road.
Also the metoriologist. or what ever you call them, at Giles was very informative, as was the walk thru the buildings.
Cheers Bucky

You'll need to apply for a permit from the WA DIA. The application is on line but SGC visits have to be referred to the community for approvals so it will take three weeks. By rights you can only enter and exit by the route mentioned by Bucky. It's a well maintained road that gets a bit corrugated usually around the community access roads. Permits for SGC cost $100 per vehicle and $20 per person from memory. You will be given an escort by one of the T/O's to the two markers at the corner.

The Giles-Mulga Park Road thru Kalka, Amata etc is a no go road. I would try for permission at the time of application or otherwise ask for permission at the community (just remember the persons name who gave it to you if it's forthcoming). The communities have ring roads around them so you do not have to enter them and this is the recommended option. Using the road is one thing, entering the community is a whole different thing and shouldn't be done unless invited.

The Camper will be no worries.

Cheers Mick

Thanks Mick, this is really helpful. When were you there? I am just starting to gather info for a July 2012 trip so it is still a while away but hopefully I'll be well and truly clued up by then. I'm checking out the WA DIA site now and bookmarking it for sure.

Did you travel the Giles-Mulga Road? Have you done the loop I am considering? If so, where did you stop to camp?

I forgot about the $$$$!$$
Bit over the top, but I can only hope it goes to the locals.
I still remember Lance, our guide to the corner, who actually lives out there
A great bloke

Yeah, it does sound a little excessive. I suppose you can ask your own price out there. …And I agree Bucky, as long as it goes back to the locals.

I was relaying all the info to my husband last night over dinner and he nearly fell off his chair. Oh well! I have over a year to work on him. Anyway, I'm the Minister of War and Finance in this household. As long as the locals let us in - we'll be going.

Give me a PM closer to the date and I will let you know how the roads are. We live and work at Papulankutja (Blackstone) just 85km up the road from Irruntju (Wingellina).
Can help with the permits into our lands if you have difficulties but not into the Pit lands (SA). I have been told that they don't issue transit permits! We have no problems using that road though. All the communities are off the main track which is a bit bad at the moment with a few washouts. The recent rains and flooding in this area has not helped the roads any.
We just went through on our hols (heading to Adelaide) and it was OK for us and our TrakShak but probably only averaged 60 or so kmh.
The Great Central is fine at the moment and is accessed as you head to the Olgas, turn left before you get there. If you are NOT going to visit the Rock & etc and are ONLY driving to the Great Central Road just let the staff know at the gate that you are going to WA and you won't have to pay to access the park. BUT BEWARE if you do this and a park ranger finds you in the park and not heading directly to the Great Central Road you will be fined.
Do all your last minute shopping at the Rock IGA and fill up at the servo. Warrakurna Roadhouse near Giles has food and fuel as do all of our communities. From Papulankutja to Erldunda on the Stuart Highway it is about 600 or so km so it may be an idea to fill at Irruntju when you call in to get your guide for the corner.
Bowks, it is a fantastic area, great scenery and at the moment very very green with lots of wild flowers and animals.
Have fun & enjoy

Bloody hell mate, wished I had known that when we did our trip thru that area, really wanted to go thru those roads, and meet some of the locals, but could not get permits.
Maybe asked the wrong blokes..never mind, next time.... and there will be a next time..
Just loved it out there.
