Does anyone know of a signal finder that will give the direction/location of Telstra 3G towers from any location, Australia wide. Cheers

Easy to use site - positions seem to be shown 200 metres North of actual position.

A shame it hasn't been updated after June 2008.

G'day George.
Something that we (in the past) were interested in from the "point of view" that when we knew exactly the bearing to direct our "home brew" yagi antenna we could get next g reception in some very remote locations.

Now, with our purchase of the Inmarsat Isatphone which uses a geo. stat. satellite constellation (no dropouts) the best of both worlds is available at very reasonable cost.

Worth looking at.

Troll.
In a word "excellent"
We have the Govt. rebate which made the purchase easier.

Yes, prepaid is the best way to go, credits last 2yrs., and top ups also extend the credit residue out a further 2yrs.

The only downside is anyone calling the phone is making an international call at pretty high cost.
Because it is an international phone, to call a local au number requires dialling the au international access code.

Outcalls about 90c./min., sms 45c.

Hi Mike39,
I am looking at buying a satellite phone – can you get the rebate on phones purchased online from the US. If so who did you purchase from?
Regards Dennis

Gday...

This site will give you the location of TV Towers and Telstra NextG towers .... you just select which one you want to see from the "Select Data" words after typing in the town you are in.....

TV & Telstra NextG Towers

Hope this is helpful ... in some way

Cheers

Gday...

Sorry .... when the map loads after typing in the town and selecting TV Tower or NextG, put your mouse over the blue markers and then click and it will show 'numbers' .... hopefully these will assist.

Cheers
John

You can get POIs for Next G towers from Australia POI You can download different formats including OziExplorer.

Another option is Nomad's Almanac but you need to add the Next G data, I have a file for it if you go down this path.

Thanks Rod. Will the Nomad's Almanac give me a search function, i.e. enter a location name, which will bring up a map of the location with Telstra NextG towers. Cheers

George, It has a search function for place names or you can enter lat/long for your position. It does not have detailed maps. It gives satellite (TV) information and distance and bearing to towers, AM/FM radio, dig/analog TV and, as I have entered, NextG.....Rod

Dumb question.
Why?
Does it make any difference if your looking in the direction of the tower? I thought the arials were omnidirectional, meaning it would not matter which way you were pointing.

TV arials I under stand. They need to be pointed towards a tower.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I should explain my reason for wanting a signal finder. I have a Yagi aerial which I want to point directly to a Telstra tower. This is to get internet connection in remote fringe areas. I know that I can the location of telstra towers from various internet sites but then I need to plot this on Oziexplorer and get the bearings that way. These web sites are not allways up to date and some of the tower positions are not always where indicated. I thought that if there was a signal direction finder available it would make it a lot easier to find the direction of Telstra towers. Any further suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers

You're over thinking this one George. Slowly rotate your Yagi aerial & look at the number of reception bars on the screen. More bars equals direction of tower :-)
Cheers Craig............

Hi Mazcan, Just telstra towers that service the mobil network but more specifcally, the Next G network. I am looking for a direction finder, similar to that used for free to air satelite finders, Cheers
