Finally doing the Simpson from west to east has come to the top of the list for later this year. I have many maps and have read what is to be found on this site and a few others. My problem is that there are so many combinations of the various roads that I am finding it hard to decide.
We are not into finding hard tracks just for the sake of saying we have done them but am happy to tackle something challenging if there is need.
We want to see the range of country, the bird, animal and plant life that goes to make the Simpson what it is. We will be taking the Troopy on this trip (no towing) which is
well setup for remote travel and we are experienced.
So taking into account that the northern section is likely to still have problems what would people suggest?
My current thought is:
Mt Dare - French Line - Waa Line - Colson Tk sth to Rig Rd - K1 Line nth to Qaa -
Birdsville

Hi Alastair
We have done the Simpson a few times now and travelled most tracks. Our favorite trek (besides the Geo Centre) is similar to what you have listed except we followed the WAA Line to the Erabena Trk south to the
Rig Road again (with a side trip to the Lone Gum), then head North on Knolls. There is some good sites along Knolls that should not be missed.

You can see on that plot where we had to take the Eyre Crk northern by-pass, which was flooded at the time.

I agree Chris. For a newbie to the Desert this route takes you over varied terrain, past numerous historic sites & has the full range of natural features the desert has to offer. When coming from the West the dunes gradually get more difficult giving drivers some practice before getting to the big ones. No doubt later this season the bypass will still be running so additional fuel required for that.

Chris,
Thank you just the sort of comment I was hoping for.
Wilko,
We are currently thinking Aug - Sep. A few other things are getting in the way at the moment. When we have a clearer timeline I will send you a message.
Thanks everyone - now back to replanning and working out the fuel needs. I hate fuel cans now and want to make sure the 190L in the tanks is enough.
cheers

Alistar, in reply to your query on fuel, we used 176ltr for 909km on that trip in our 80 series wagon, aftermarket turbo 1hz.
Filled to the brim at
Oodnadatta (270ltr's) and re-fuelling at
Birdsville.

Chris,
I will be taking our non-turbo 1Hz troopy which has 90+100L. On my rough reckoning the distance from Mt Dare to Bridsville via the suggested route is ~550km. From previous trips in soft sand I would expect to use around 20L/100km or 5km/L which means I need 110L. Thus my capacity should be fine if I top up at Mt Dare.
Your consumption figure is just about the same. From your track log is the 550km distance about right?
cheers

You are close Alastair, it was 639km from Mt Dare to
Birdsville including the by-pass, 586km excluding, with the by-pass added and extra 53km.
Give or take a few K's

Chris,
Thanks for the confirmation - yes I did not include the bypass which I know is necessary at the moment.
cheers
