Get motor hot, bridge theTEN and GND terminals in the diagnostic connector which is located beside the power steering reservoir, now set timing to 5BTDC.
Thanks Graham

Graham,

I cannot determine which is pin 10. There are only 8 pins used and the cable colours are (colour/trace) Yellow/red,Yellow/black, Brown/red, Black/yellow, Black/orange, Dark Blue/pink, orange and black.
There is R1 at one corner of the plug but I cannot determine which is pin 10 because no matter which way you count from that corner none of the pins with wires connected lines up.
I've had the ute to our local mazda dealer for a tune up a while back and it did not seem to start any better or go better on fuel so thats why I'm trying to check the timing myself.

TEN stands for" Test Engine " and GND is 'Ground',there location is marked by looking under the lid of the diagnostic connector box it has a pin mud map in it
Thanks Graham

Graham,

I looked under the lid and it doesn't have a pin mud map. It's a grey plastic lid and it has diagnostic written on the top but it's bare underneath.
I assume the black wire will be earth and that can be easily confirmed with a meter. If there is only one wire going from the distributor to the diagnostic plug then I assume that this is the wire to be shorted. I will use the meter on low current to short and hopefully if there is a problem the fuse in the meter will blow.

Steve.
