hey all
just looking at the posibility of purchasing a 97 Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier
just wondering what type of towing capacity these have? redbook states 2,500...but it seems as though it must be more, seeing the patrols is 3,500. is there any reason why it is so low?
what are these like for everyday driving (fuel economy and comfort) and 4x4ing?
what mods are good to make the 4x4 a more capable machine?
cheers for your help

G'day south_maw, the early troopy's had a bad reputation for falling over when running on skinny tyres in the wrong circustances, eg, top heavy with high centre of gravity and road camber and speed.

3.5 tonne towing cap
4 k/p thrashed
6 k/p normal driving, if a light foot maybe even 7 k/p
If serviced, good machine!
Towing 3.5 tonne = SLOW, but will do it
non turbo, sand terrible!
rock etc very good!
have owned 3 of them

Yep that model is 3500kg towing cap. Good honest vehicle and if serviced properly you will get some great K's out of them, I think member Doug T has around 700000k on his.
She would be a pretty steady pace if you tow 3500kg with the 1hz but it will tow it ok.
As for falling over as suggested earlier, I have an 89 model and it has been many, many evil
places and it hasn't fallen over yet, you just can't drive them like a sports car.
Hope you find a good one.

Yep, great vehicle if you're not in a hurry.
Lyndon says "terrible in sand". Maybe, but fabulous in surf. Just look at my Profile Picture. LOL

Well firstly Rockape, you need VERY FAT tyres to get the flotation if you're fully laden.
And I think the "NO TURBO" sign on the rear bumper is great to advise following drivers to appreciate why you are going so slow uphill. LOL

Yep. Good solid vehicle. Not too much "cabbage" on them so easier to fix if you have trouble.

We have a 95 model with just short of 400K on the clock. Good reliable vehicle that does everything sedately but it does get there.
We get 10 - 12 L/100km or 10 - 8 k/l depending on conditions. If pushed hard and in soft sand will drink up to 18L/100km.
We use ours for no tow remote trips and it is fitted out for it. See our profile for mods but the 2" lift, LR tank,
water tank and storage system makes it the good vehicle it is. The roof rack is just used for spares wheels and the awning out over the back which is an absolute must.
cheers

what are the turbo kits like for the troopy? what sort of power gains to you achieve by them?
also can you chip the diesel engines without a turbo? i am unsure if you can or not
cheers

Not sure about Turboing one of that age but my 2000 model is non turbo but I installed a set of headers (extractors) and it made a world of difference to performance ie an extra gear and saved about 2lt per 100kays so now average 12lt/100 all day.
