Heading to
Perth end of June and we only have 3 weeks. We want to get there as quickly but safely as possible, spend a few days with family and head back. We anticpate 4/5 days to get there, 4 days visiting which will leave us 12 days to get back. We would like to come back, at least some of the way off the black top. We will be towing an off road caravan. Any thoughts or suggestions of a route would be appreciated

I am not familiar with the roads personally but I understand from a person who has recently done what you wan to do that there are parts of the road that follows the railway line that are not accessible as some station owners have banned travel through their property. I think he came across the
Anne Beadell Highway into
Coober Pedy.

12 days to get back you could go via great central rd. Drop in and see uluru on the way back. This would be a suggested route.

Anne Beadel track from Emu to Myrtle definately not recommended for any sort of caravan.

Anne Beadell as far as Vokes
Hill Corner and then south to the bitumen via
Cook.

An interesting diversion off the highway in SA is via the
Gawler Ranges which is on all reasonable to good gravel roads.
On Eyre Highway turn northeast between
Wirrulla and Poochera, (approx 20km east of
Wirrulla) after 67 km turn east at
Barber Hill and you have about 200km to
Iron Knob.
I recall at least one
farm-stay along the way and plenty
places to free-
camp if required.
Watch the weather, like all back roads, rain will make them interesting if not impassable.

If you haven't already done the road, Main Nth Road from Pt
Augusta to
Adelaide via
Wilmington,
Clare etc is FAR better and prettier to travel than Pt Wakefield Rd, much more interesting I reckon.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, there are a couple of options we hadn't thought of. We will decide when we get to
Perth and be dictated by any weather issues.
