Hi all,
I am looking into hiring a
HF radio for an upcoming trip along the CSR but am having trouble finding anyone who hires them. Could anyone refer me to somewhere that hires HF radios. I am in
Gladstone, Qld, but I expect most
places use a courier service to deliver them to wherever you are.
I can find plenty of
places to hire sat phones but not
HF radio.
Thanks
Ando

Ando,
I think that trying to hire a
HF radio these days would be very hard. It is not just the radio but the installation of the unit, the aerial mount and the operating licence requirements.
A sat phone might be your only option along with a good
UHF radio.

I came across a guy in
Brisbane that reconditions Codan 9323
HF Radio and sells them. I had a chat to him as I was considering putting one in the ‘other Landy’. He was very helpful and is
Brisbane based.
I’ve posted a link to his website below, and as Wayne has mentioned, the cost and installation of a hire radio (if you can get one) probably rules it out as an option. If hiring anything the Satphone is probably your best option, but might be more cost effective to just buy one.
Good luck, and enjoy your travels.

Thanks Wayne and The Landy for the info.
I have hired a
HF radio once before but about 10 or 11 years ago. It came in a carry case and had alligator clips to connect to the battery when you needed to use it, a tap antenna with a cable to plug into the required tap. Obviously it was only used when stationary and not set up to use any time but still suited our needs.
I think you are right that HF hire is something of the past, everything seems to be satphone these days. It's a bit of a shame because the key feature I see of a
HF radio compared to satphone is that you can broadcast to everyone who is listening rather than having to dial to one number only, which in an emergency could make all the difference.

Installation is not a necessity - boxed style HF's can be stowed away and got out when needed - can't help with hirers - presume you have tried the main retailers - other sources of info might be the HF networks -
HF Radio club, VKS737, HF Oz / Radtel, Bush Telegraph (Reids Radiodata), and others.
