You're obviously someone who knows this part of the world well.......we are planning to leave Dalhousie for the run across the Simpson around the 3rd week in July. What do you reckon our chances are with the water around the salt flats, Eyre Creek and Big Red etc at that time?

Expect them to be wet. Eyre creek may be cross-able by then.

Dave & Jade,

Your a bit lite on details, but if you mean can you get all the way from Dalhousie Springs to Birdsville then the simple answer is no!

The complicated answer is yes the Simpson Desert is open & mostly dry through to Poepple Corner, the QAA line through to Birsville is closed due to flooding of Eyre Creek & may not re-open untill mid to late July.

There have been quite a few groups of people as well as individuals heading out into the Simpson Desert & doing a loop out from Dalhousie Springs & returning, there has also been a few groups heading across to Poepple Corner & up the Hay river track.

At least one group has been across the Madigan line & is returning via the French line.

Hope this helps.

A bit of an idea. We were hoping to use the Warburton Track out of the Simpson. Word had it that the Warburton Crossing may be closed. If it isn't then that may be an option. Otherwise the Hay River Track to the north may be okay for you. We cannot go this year as we do not have enough holidays left from my wife's work. A wedding took too many. *^#^#$3

The Warburton track has been closed for the last two years & won't re-open for at least the another year!

Thanks Jeff

Thats what I was afraid of. It allows two good loops from Canberra up into the Simpson and back again with minimal repeats on the same tracks.

Any idea what the Hay River Track is like? Maybe that option could do the same for us.

We had a couple of blokes come through the other night who tried to follow thr Hay river track down from Jervois & they had a lot of trouble getting through, they ended up returning to Jervois & coming across the Plenty.

There are at least two groups travelling up the Hay at the moment, hopefully they get through & let us know what the conditions are like.

We have a couple of new staff menbers crossing the Madigan line at the moment, then heading back via the French line, when they get back we will have a lot more real time info'
