Would anyone know if there is a usable track that runs from
Coongie Lakes to the
Birdsville Track, or maybe one that goes north west or west from the
Coongie Lakes to the
Walkers Crossing Track? I thought there was a track north west from Coongie about 20 - 30 years ago, but can't see anything marked on any current maps.
Thanks
Poitr

I know there is a track from Coongie to the
Walkers Crossing area that links in with the Santos gas roads. It's not open to the public. Likewise many years ago I remember a track taking off to the right heading north on the way out to Coongie. I was told these were station tracks. Looking on the Google satalite photo's confirms that they are still there but are very faint. They would all be currently untrafficable due to the rain & Cooper flows.

Hi Poitr
As you would be aware, the country up that way is still under water and is likely to be closed to all traffic for a long time yet.
In a short answer to you question 'NO'
When the Coongie Track is open, travel is restricted to the main route to Coongie only and the only legal way to access the
Birdsville Track from that area is only permitted via
Walkers Crossing, again when it is open.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi all,
Great place
Coongie lakes,
Unfortunately The track is unlikely to be reopened in 2011. Innaminka has another flood surge due about now and the causeway is closed as is all camping along the river.
regards
Guy

Coming down the
Birdsville track in the mid 80's I remember a signposted track ("Coongie" with an arrow, on the lid from an old oil drum) somewhere north of Koonchera that ran off to the south east. Sounds like this track no longer exists, which is a pity.
Don't mind postponing a trip to Coongie until 2012, when the country and wildlife are getting such a great kick along from all the water flows.
