The 3.0l diesel is good - as long as it gets clean fuel (then again same goes for all new diesels). The only problem is the gearbox - a carry over from the bad old Courier days with 5th gear giving up after a bit having done a bit of work.
Have not heard of any problems with the auto box behind the same engine. rgds

G'day ron j1, my 3 year old former local govt
Ranger has now done 65000 klms with the only issues being recalls for bonnet catch reinforcement and auto gear selector cable bracket at gear box end needing upgrade. I use Flashlube diesel conditioner at 1ml to the litre of fuel. Purrrs like a cat in a fish
shop. Tows my 1200kg humpy like it wasn't there. Knowing the vehicles history is important if buying secondhand. Go for it. Just in case you don't know , never tow in the overdrive gear.

G'day ron j1, if you decide to put a tray on the cab-chassis and are going to be towing heavy loads, placing weight over the rear wheels will help reduce wheel spin. Bags of sand might be helpful and they take the bounce out of the ride when traveling empty.

Hi,
I am now on my second
Ranger and have had no major problems with them at all.
I have driven Rangers that were taxpapyer funded vehicles, ie we drove them with no respect and actually tried to break them a lot of the time.
We could never quite break them though and this experience was the deciding factor in my purcahse of a
Ranger the first time around.
May I suggest you visit here
4WD action Ford Ranger forum and ask for some more model specific
feedback.
Regards
Adrian
