Hello All,
I found this site fantastic when researching 12 months ago the track conditions in the
Vic High Country. Can anyone please tell me what is the best way to get some novice four wheel drivers into wonnangatta valley. We are starting out in the buckland valley, heading across the selwyn area to east riley track down the wonnangatta track entrance. Could anyone help me out on the best route to take from the buckland valley rd, track names would be great. Was also thinking of water spur and humffray
river track would these be suitable for a novice driver? We have been into the valley from zeka and herne spur in previous years but never from the northern side and not with inexperienced drivers. Any help would be appreciated. And one last thing, how are the river crossings at the moment, anyone been into the area in the last month or so.
Cheers Dave.O

When are you going? Most of that area, inc the Valley and most of the tracks you mention will close on Queens Birthday Weekend till November.
It would be simpler to come in from Abbeyard if your intention is just to come in from the North.

Hi Dave
Easter just past, we went in from the north, via Abeyard, East Buffalo, Riley Track and the Wonnangatta Track, towing camper trailers. Relatively simple drive, a bit rough as you get closer to the descent into Wonnangatta itself. That could change after rain - we had a dry trip. The river levels seemed low.
Camped near us in the Valley was a Ford Territory, with a box trailer on a ball hitch, so that will tell you how easy that route is. We felt quite overprepared with our big tyres and off road trailers! But then, I doubt he/she would have made it up Herne Spur with us the next day!! We travelled from Myrtleford and it took about 3 hours from town to the valley floor.
I'd say it is suitable for novices, particularly if someone more experienced is travelling with them.

Thanks for the
feedback and the river levels link. We are planning the trip for two weeks time, was aware of the seasonal track closures. Glad to hear a terrritory with standard trailer can get in, all the vehicles coming with us are relatively
well prepared and no trailers so thats certainly not going to be our achilles heal. Unfortunately coming in from the myrtleford direction is not in our plans, and is quite a lengthy detour from where we are based. I'd really like to hear about the best way from the buckland valley road. Does anyone know about water spur and humffray in particular?
Again thanks for the speedy replies, much appreciated.

Gaday Dave. From the Buckland I'd head up the main Selwyn logging Road, turning left at the five ways then right on the Divide Track. This will lead you accross to the East Buffalo, Riley's & finally drop into the Valley via the Wonnangatta track.
Water spur & the Western end of the Humffray
River track would be OK in the dry as another option although it's a bit steeper.
Presently the rivers are quite low (bumper height) but as with all High Country Rivers be prepared for them to rise rapidly after rain. Last Cup weekend there were at least 4 blown engines in the valley that we know of & many more washed off crossings so pay attention to forecasts. As always there are lots of trees falling since the fires in this area so take a chainsaw.
