Storage rack for hilux

Hello all. I have a 97 twin cab hilux ute, no canopy. With a medium sized tool kit in the back there really isnt alot of storage space in the back. I was thinking about fixing a couple of small racks to the rear guard( behind the rear window), the type that would usually be used to hold 20l jerry cans, or something similar. One would probably be used for a diesel container and the other for general storage. With one of these on each side of the rack I am guessing that there would be enough visability to see out the rear vision mirror. Is this feesable, and if so, has anyone done a similar thing?. I have fitted this above my tray it is held in by 4 pins and can be removed within minutes when not required. When going away for a weekend I can tie off my swag to the underside of the rack
